My mother opened a store on here about 20 years ago & had it for 10-15 yrs. She stated the final straw was when Ebay started charging fees for using mailing labels - her labels, her ink, her printer, but ebay charges for it- She stated should be included in store fee, I agree, but I have had a store for about 5 years now.

I have a small store on here & so DID one of my siblings.....My sibling was e-mailed 4 months ago stating had to change to MP ...he didnt & shut down his store...at that time, I realized not everyone is being forced to change to it (MP) and I would like to know why or why not .....Now I received the email,,,,,Ebay has never had an issue with getting their money from me nor my brother......

I think they are:

1) GREEDY !

2) attempting to rid themselves of the smaller store owners, yanno, the ones that have helped them over the past 20 or so yrs ago to get where they are today....

3) Liars, they put the email out there like they are doing a wonderful thing for you, but I know its a set up ! the Rat have never ever done anything to make it more profitable or save money for buyers/sellers in the past 20 years !  Mark my words, more fees & excuses for such are coming, I wont be here to see it

Past few years, I barely make enough on here to cover all the fees & ebay just keeps adding more,  so I will not be converting to MP,,,,,Ebay has a lot of competition now.....I will be opening my store elsewhere

Since a label IS the postage, why would it distress her to be charged for mailing labels?

Or did you mean when eBay started basing the FVF on the total price paid by the buyer, including shipping?

I thought that was clearly explained at the time it was implemented.

In the beginning there were some sellers who would list their $100 item for $1 with $99 shipping, meaning that the FVF on that sale would be 10 cents.  Evidently there was no way eBay could find to sanction those sellers, so that's when they began charging the final value fee on the TOTAL amount the buyer paid the seller, regardless of how it was portioned out.  That way, I, with my $1 diamond bracelet with $99 shipping was charged the same FVF as you with your $99 diamond bracelet and $1 shipping.

I'll never believe that was the real reason. They could have controlled the shipping abusers without charging everyone. I think that charging FVF on the shipping came about because Ebay needed to make more money and if they had raised the percentage of the FVF it would have caused more unhappy sellers than charging the FVF on the shipping. I think at the time the economy wasn't the best but Ebay needed a way to get more money so this was the answer and the FVF percentage stayed the same.

OK, everyone is entitled to their own take on this.  Was trying to get the OP to explain his/her statement that her/his mother was appalled that eBay charged for shipping labels.

Hi,

So you are not on MP right now? About 2 months ago eBay put my account on hold and said I was not allowed to sell anything until I signed up for it. Are there still people selling on here without having signed up for MP? I don't like MP at all!! It's a pain in the butt and I have been in this help section for over an hour now trying to figure out how I can give a buyer a partial refund without an open case. With PayPal it was so easy, but this MP thing is ridiculous!!

no, not yet, I have until May 21st......and yes, some sellers are not being forced to change....they attempted to force my brother months ago (he shut down his store), now me.....I suspect they are "cherry picking" (only forcing certain sellers) & they are choosing the small sellers....possibly in an attempt to get like Amazon

They state they are saving us paypal fees, and I believe they & their past sidekick Paypal are parting ways. But I assure you, later down the line, the fees we will be saving, ebay will find an excuse to charge . They want all the money in their pocket so they are cutting out the middle man (paypal)

I agree with read about horses regarding the selling fee percentages & shipping & they do charge for using their shipping label software/program.....

just because someones reason for doing it is "explained" does not necessarily make it fair or correct, they could have set up a fining system for violators...I am sure there were many other clever alternatives rather than punishing all

I'm not crazy about the fee on postage, but eBay DID try various methods, and it was so unwieldy that they finally switched to this system.  I recall it very well because I was one of the sellers continually stuck in the mess.  Etsy is another site that does this.
