Just purchased a ps vita from Japan

I purchased a ps vita from a buyer in Japan, who has excellent reviews.  However, he recently informed me I might get charged in custom fees.  I already paid $135 for the vita which included a $12 tax.  I hope I don’t end up paying another hundred or more for just a small game system in these so called custom fees or import fees.

Not sure what he means with customs fees, but for US Import, you have a max of $800 duty free per day.

He might have probably be pro-active in advising his foreign buyers that their purchase might be dutiable.

This is what he said, exactly.

Secondly, regarding customs duties, please note that your purchase may be subject to customs duties, which are to be borne by the buyer.”

Standard verbiage for any international transaction.  As above, duty doesn't kick in until $800.  I get hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from Japan and am never charged duty.

You could have easily gotten this information, BTW, from US customs.

Sorry this is my first time purchasing stuff from eBay - let alone from outside the US.  Are you saying I won’t Pay a lot more in import fees or duties or what not any more than what I already paid?

I'm a licensed US Customs broker for a major courier company and I deal with clearing numerous parcel through International transactions into the US. I'm located very close to the facility in question and I'm very familiar with this. Here is a link directly rom US Customs, indicating as such, $800 is the daily max allowed. Identical to the exemption when you arrive from overseas and fill out your I-94 form, anything above and it will be dutiable.

So what you are saying is if I ended up paying for a product that was more than $800, I’d end up paying for the import/custom fees?

Re: Just purchased a ps vita from Japan

Correct, you are responsible for customs duties for any imported item valued more than $800. If your import item cost $801, you are responsible for duties on $801 of merchandise. It depends on type of commodity what type of duty will be accessed. Handbags are on the high end with 20%, but most item are within 3-5%. There are some duty free items as well.

Sorry, so many people post under posting IDs now that it's hard to tell.  You should not be charged import duties if the items are under $800.  You WILL be subject to your state taxes if your state is participating in the marketplace facilitator scheme.  Check here to see if this is the case:  https://www.avalara.com/us/en/learn/guides/state-by-state-guide-to-marketplace-facilitator-laws.html  Taxes are buyer nexus, which means they are charged by the state the buyer (you) resides in.

Re: Just purchased a ps vita from Japan

In the US we are lucky with having almost non existent import charges, you will not have any on the item you ordered.

Most countries, like Canada, all of Europe and South America, you are paying 20-40% of the product cost in import charges. It's really a warning for those countries.

In 20 years of ordering high dollar items from other countries to the USA, have never once paid an import charge. Plenty of the packages were declared over $800.
