JUST OFF THE PHONE with Ebay managed payments department

I'm just off the phone with Ebays managed payments department and the first thing I will say is the rep I had was VERY NICE and understanding as to my questions.  MY QUESTION WAS with pending status of payments, does ebay recommend that items be shipping BEFORE pending status is released, and that is from the day the payment is made to the day the monies clear from my financial institution.  Ebay holds payeents for 2 to 4 days, depending on the type of payment, and financial institutions will put on pending status for 2 to 5 days, and please note these are business days.  I explained that currently, I ship either SAME DAY or next, NEVER any later, and currently with Covid shipping times have gotten even longer, and I think most sellers will agree on that, (yes I know there will be comments here otherwise, but this has been my experience)

SO, according to this VERY NICE rep at ebay, it sounds like this had not been thought through at Ebay.   They give no recommendations as to when an item should be shipped with monies not avaliable for sellers to have access to.   If I sell an item with managed payments and ship next day, USPS PRIORITY, a 3 to 5 day service, the buyer will have the item BEFORE, long before the monies are even available to me, and I think it goes without saying that this is a potential issue with cancelled payments for whatever reason that may be.  Its clear from the discusions on this thread that there is a nurturing of buyers to understand that its very easy to stop a payment for basically whatever reason and not much backing from Ebay, sorry to say this, its not frustration, its reality.  I'VE CALLED 2 times now looking for clarification on WHEN I should ship items with pending status and there is no answer at ebay.  (Again, I know that many here are going to say, oh, you should ship immediately, but that is not what ebay is saying)    IN FACT, there was a buyer a while ago who posted on this thread that stated he had not received an item that tracking had showed had been received and he got his money back on the item.  And there will be other issues with pending status of payments no doubt, I dont think this can be disputed, (but again, I'm sure I will get comments otherwise)  I'VE ALWAYS SAID that internet transactions are fully based on trust, but policies here breakdown that trust so transactions are harder to complete successfully.   IN other words, ebay has basically nurtured the buyer into believing they can do no wrong.

WHY CANT EBAY send out correspondence to BUYERS stating that they have changed their business model with their payment process, and it now requires that monies will be on hold for possibly 10 days and that sellers will be holding shipments until payments are released.  They could also explain how it "enhances" their experience because they can now pay with Apple Pay, BUT shipments will be delayed due to the processing of payments now.  WHY CANT EBAY send out correspondence to buyers stating that transactions of this nature require communication for successful transactions and how important that is.  To my knowledge they have never done so.  BUYERS ARE LOOKING AT THIS DISCUSSION FORUM, and there taking notes, wouldnt  you think so????

I also asked about the security of the information that is required and of course the answer is its very secure.  If thats the case, perhaps ebay should get together with our Federal Government and teach them to secure their systems becuase as far as I understand, hacking is doable in any institution, and its scary to think of the information that is being transferred here.

SO BASICALLY, there is no direction here at Ebay on these things I feel are issues with their new model.   What was told to me is that Ebay is considering these issues and will adjust when necessary and that depends on the feedback they get, so if your a seller and are wondering about cleared payments with this new program, call them and ask the question, WHEN DOES EBAY RECOMMEND I SHIP AN ITEM THAT THE PAYMENT STATUS IS PENDING AT MY END THROUGH MY FINANCIAL INSTITUTION.  See what they say.

Enhance the buyer experience??????  Enhance the seller experience?????  Come on now good ebayers, how is it doing that??

I look forward to all comments, keeping an open mind here, trying to make decisions that make sense.

If you're concerned about security, don't give your data to a marketplace. Give it only to a payments processor and use them as a proxy for doing business online.

Google "Paypal Appcenter Marketplaces" for these types of platforms.

"hacking is doable in any institution, and its scary to think of the information that is being transferred here. "

Don't forget you gave that out of country 3rd party processor the rights to act on your behave by giving them power of attorney to your bank account.  That's "scary".

Were ebay to do this ^^^^^^, they might as well just say "Please expect 3-6 weeks for delivery", and that would go over like a great big lead balloon with buyers.

There is little difference between the old system and the new system insofar as shipping goes save we no longer have the illusion that the funds in our Paypal were somehow "ours."  They were not, they were extended to us as a free loan while the origin payment source was processing and could be drawn out of our Paypal accounts for any reason by eBay/Paypal, and sometimes were - the money was only 'ours' when we transferred it to our bank accounts, similar to our money in managed payments being transferred to our bank accounts.  It was a bad idea always to use Paypal as some kind of 'bank' when it is not, and I always transferred money into my bank account every week for that exact reason - I wanted it in my bank account, not in Paypal's hands.  It took two days for the bank transfer.

Ship from pending payments - it works out the same.

If   Ebay "holds payments for 2 to 4 days" and these payments include shipping cost (whether included in the cost of the item or added on") are we suppose to front the shipping cost while ebay is sitting on our money.

I will have to change my shipping time from "within one day" to when I receive the cleared payment. Should have happy buyers--not really.

I've been in MP since August, 2019... nothing nefarious is going on. My buyer's payment is my bank deposit in 4 business days, and I've never experienced a payment not  move all the way to 'Completed' once it begins 'Processing'.

While eBay's recommended 'best practice' is same-day shipping, as long as you ship within the Handling Time on your listing, you're gold. Also, if you choose to, you can take shipping fees from Pending Payouts.

Good luck and welcome aboard.

I'm honestly shocked by the number of people who apparently just carry large balances in PayPal all the time. Do they not know that if your account gets hacked/frozen, PayPal won't help you get any of that money back, unlike an actual bank?

Thanks for your response, appreciate it, my handling time is when I get money for the item, cleared payment, has always been that way even when we got checks for payment way back before paypal even.  STILL there is no direction from ebay on this issue, and they are well aware of it being an issue.  If they say once payment is received its guaranteed, then why the need for a pending status, and then there is my financial institution and their processing of direct deposits, Ebay did have a suggestion for me, they asked if I could talk to my bank to see if they could process deposits faster.  Given ebays policies, and the way I feel correct business is done, I think its best to ship items with CLEARED PAYMENTS.  JMHO

AGAIN, appreciate your comment - best to you!!

Ebay says the following on the Awaiting Shipment page in Seller Hub.........I don't know why there would be any question about what they expect:

Awaiting shipment means the buyer’s payment is confirmed and it’s time to ship the order. To see when the funds will be sent to your bank account, visit Payments. Get more help with your managed payments questions.

Hello - thanks for your comments, really appreciate it.  I did not find that to be the case, in fact, I could get money orders on my pay pal balance at any time, which is what I did.  Yes, I paid 1.25 for the money orders but big deal, and I used the paypal card to pay for shipping.   To me, the money was there at all times and available to me 10 minutes after payment was made.   With this new payment model, it will not be available for 10 days the way I see it.  EXAMPLE - my last stimulus check was direct deposited into my bank account and was pending for 4 days, I could not take a withdrawal on it until it processed as available.  Ebay did suggest that I talk to my bank to see if they could process direct deposits any faster, this is the suggestions and justifications I get from them.   I dont think I'm going to ask my bank that question.

AGAIN, appreciate your comments, BEST  to you!!

Yes they do.

They recommend that you ship when the status of the transactions is Awaiting Shipment.

This is clearly spelled out in the online help - no need to call and ask.

Orders and shipping
You should ship as soon as you see the "Awaiting shipment" status on the Manage Orders page in Seller Hub, or "Ready to Ship" in My eBay, even if you haven't received payment to your checking account. Don't worry, we'll only display this status once we've confirmed the buyer's order.

Thats what you're being asked to do, and ebay holds for 2 to 4 days, and then your financial institution holds for at least that long or even longer.   AS I bring up, this "enhances" the buyers experience??  Pay with Apple pay, they make it sound like buyers had no choices on payment before and of course they did.  BOTTOM LINE - you wont have access to your money for 10 days the way I see it.
