Hold on money over return request

I'm in managed payments and just got a return request on an item. Buyer said they 'ordered by mistake' and they don't need the item. eBay has put a hold on the funds for the return. This didn't happen when a return was opened before I was entered into managed payments. I don't like this at all, I am perfectly capable of refunding the buyer without eBay holding the money, once the buyer returns the item. I could see this being a huge problem if the item was a high dollar item.

They will continue holding that money for a day or 2 after they send the refund, out of your pending payments or your bank account. In the meantime, do you suppose that that money could be collecting interest? Nah...

I try to think of 'Processing' payments as 'Blue Sky Money' anyway... and just roll with it. If that helps. Good luck.

That was certainly helpful.

Re: Hold on money over return request

This MP policy is annoying at best and can be very frustrating.  It is something that MP has done that many of us don't agree with that is for sure.   It is one of the recent changes to MP that many of us have strongly voiced our opinions regarding this to Ebay and some of us will continue to do so in the hopes that Ebay will hear us and come up with a compromise that we can all live with.  Time will tell.  But for now you are absolutely correct.

Please come back and confirm, @craigsdieselrepair: That amount WILL CONTINUE TO BE HELD even after you're refunded the buyer from additional alternate funds.

Re: Hold on money over return request

Yes, the return hold policy isn't seller friendly at all.  First it's not explained anywhere, which is 100% crazy for a process that's going to involve most sellers. The other issue is that the hold is a completely separate transaction from the return.  The hold is done immediately no matter whether the return is remorse or MBG. Once the return is complete and seller has issued a refund via MP, the hold still remains for at least 24 hours. During that period the sellers available funds are reduced by BOTH the hold and refund he / she issued.

Re: Hold on money over return request

I'm not sure because the buyer still hasn't returned the item. I suspect that he will not return the item, once he saw that he had to pay for return shipping. So for now, the money is in limbo, and the buyer has until Oct 13 to return the item! So I won't have the item or the money, for almost a month!

To make matters worse, a buyer who purchased a $1500 turbo opened a return stating they purchased the wrong item. So now my eBay payouts are in the hole for over $1500! And the real kicker is- when I went to purchase labels 2 nights ago for some packages that needed to go out- it would not allow me to use my payouts to pay for the labels due to the open return put my account in the red! Luckily I had money in PayPal, since that was the only other option given for paying for the labels!!!

This is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: Hold on money over return request

Another question here-

I had another buyer open a return for a $1500 turbo which put my payouts in the hole!

The question is- once he returns the turbo and I refund him, how will I get reimbursed for my seller fees? eBay used to credit your monthly invoice, but since they are taking their fees upfront, surely they give you the fees back right away, right?

Also, do I get reimbursed the 3% that I'm charged for processing the payment? Because on $1500, that's going to be over $40 just for the payment processing fees! I shouldn't be out one cent since the buyer is the one who purchased the turbo by mistake. Who purchases a $1500 part without making sure it's the correct part that they need?!? I'm SO frustrated over all of this.

I don't like MP holding money for claims any better than anyone else.  It is something many of us got past with PP years ago.  There are other sellers that did have their money held in PP, but for a lot of us seasoned sellers, PP stopped doing that, so we are right back into that mess again.  I don't like it either.

Well if there is any bright side to your second case, at least they were honest and opened a Buyer's Remorse return, so for you they have to pay for the return shipping.

You can set your PP account to pull the shipping labels from a credit card or so I've been told.  I haven't done it, I've just read that some other sellers have done that.

That's a good question.  IDK if they credit your MP account or your Seller Invoice.  I'd think it would be your MP account.  Let's see if we can get that one properly answered.

@Anonymous

The payment processing fee is contained inside the Simplified Fee that MP charges.  The entire fee is credited back to you on a full refund.

Now in this particular case you will be able to reduce your refund by the original shipping if it was stated separately on the purchase.  So hopefully Charles will answer that portion too.

I don't blame you for being frustrated.  It is a lot of money to have out there in limbo.  I think your feelings are very understandable.

Re: Hold on money over return request

Thank you for the responses. I feel much better after reading what everyone has to say.

Hopefully this will all go smoothly. The buyer still hasn't shipped the item, so I'm sort of in limbo, just waiting to see what happens.

Re: Hold on money over return request

Recent return.

My MP seller fees (less the 30 cents) was credited as soon as the buyer was refunded.

Fees went back into pending funds.
