Gift card scam (asking for last 4 digit code)

A scammer asked for a photo of my card. OK; no problem. He can't use it without the Redemption Code, right? So this should be safe.

But wait, then he asks me for the last 4 digits of the Redemption Code. Which, as we all now know, gives him the keys to the kingdom, and my card, which once had $100 on it, now has $0. Because the other digits are all in plain text on the card!!!

Bottom line: it's ingenuous for Ebay to say the card can't be used without the Redemption Code, implying that you'd need the ENTIRE coe. True, you need the entire code, but eBay GIVES AWAY the first 9 characters unmasked, in plain text, in plain sight.

Ebay cards print the redemption code at the bottom of the card in plain sight. Do not share that back of your card. Giving the last 4 digits of the redemption code allows for the card to be used!

Exactly what were you buying and did you find it listed on eBay with an eBay item #?

Gift cards are for family and friends only, not total strangers.

A scammer asked for a photo of my card.

Why are you discussing your gift card with strangers on the internet in the first place?

If someone is asking for gift card code digits, you should ask yourself why. The only reason that makes any sense is to be able to spend the money on the card. Otherwise, there is no purpose to such a request.

eBay did not give anything away; you did that yourself.

No one should ever ask for such a photo.  If you have given any numbers out, call the number on the back of that card and get it locked before you lose your money.  If it's an eBay gift card, the numbers should only be entered into the eBay site and never by phone, text of photos.
