Before I cut all ties with ebay, I need to make sure I understand this correctly--is it not possible to accept payments through ebay without giving them direct access to my bank account? Seems like a ridiculous risk to take. Thanks in advance.

If you want paid for the 2 items you sold, you'll have to sign up for MP, providing a checking account and the last 4 of your SSN.

In MP eBay seller payments will be made to an attached provided checking account.
I opened a checking account dedicated to eBay. It is separate from my household checking, and my personal checking.

Correct, and it's is recommended that you open a separate checking account for eBay payments only. Most banks and credit unions offer free checking accounts that you can apply for online. Just be sure, if you do decide to stay, that your name is an exact match on eBay and the checking account.

So paypal didn't have access to a bank account? How'd you get paid then?

PayPal can send you a paper check.
You can get a PayPal debit card that works in an ATM.

Tis true. Those are a couple other options. But there is also an option to have the money transferred to your bank account. On the threads various posters often bring it up as there was also an option, for a small fee, to get instant transfers to your bank account. Lots of posters have posted about it.
