Viewing status of an item I'm selling

Apologies in advance for being a moron.

I'm new to eBay.  Last Saturday I created a listing for an item to be auctioned.  How can I view it to see if there has been any activity on it?

I thought there might be a way to ask someone at eBay, a live chat or maybe even speak with someone.  Is that possible?

I appreciate any guidance you can give.

Thanks

PS the item is a book, "Classic American Cars", item #385323650330

Re: Viewing status of an item I'm selling

Welcome @wu0690. This page is a central hub where you can check out activity like views, watchers and bids - also make revisions and see how much time is left.

https://www.ebay.com/sh/lst/active

Even though eBay suggests listing items at 99 cent auctions, that is almost never a good idea. Unless an item is highly desirable and will generate a lot of interest, new sellers will often lose money when their item actually sells for 99 cents in the end - if it sells at all. Auction format is not the best option for items with an easily identified value.

Try ending the listing and putting it up as fixed price format. Fixed price format is "good 'til cancelled" which means it will automatically renew every month until it either sells or you end it. If you need help researching prices on sold listings so you can figure out how to price your book, let us know.

Re: Viewing status of an item I'm selling

That is not an item you want to sell via an auction.  Auctions are largely a thing of the past on Ebay.  It is also an item that has lots of competition for prices far below your shipping cost.  You need to do some basic research on your items before listing.  And just exactly where did you pull that $22 shipping cost from? (as he tries  to get the right wording not to get yet another one week ban from the mods)

Looks like a great book for the right buyer. Any chance you could ship it via a less expensive option? What about media mail? Was that available? (Note that media mail cannot include advertising. A packing slip, yes--although most sellers don't use them--but advertising is prohibited.)

Re: Viewing status of an item I'm selling

On the eBay main page, up in the upper right-ish corner you'll see a bell icon, which is a message icon, and a shopping cart icon.  To the left of those you will see the words "My eBay" with an arrow pointing down.  Click on that arrow and choose "Selling" from the drop-down menu.  Once you are on the Selling page, you can click "Active" for more info on your one active listing.

Do NOT be alarmed at a low number of views.
AND posting your question here was a much better choice than trying to contact anybody at eBay.

Couple questions, though:

Are you really really  OK with selling this book for Ninety-Nine Cents?
You have listed it as an auction with a minimum starting bid of ninety-nine cents.
IF somebody is willing to pay for the expedited shipping, they may just win the auction with a bid of 99 cents.

And YOU will then be required to send the book to them, once you have received a message from eBay that the buyer has paid.  You cannot change your mind and cancel the sale, saying, "No, no, I really wanted to get more than Ninety-Nine Cents for this book!"

And then:  Are you aware of the Final Value Fee (FVF) structure that eBay charges to sellers when their listed items sell?  You've listed your book in a Collectibles category, so you would probably be charged a FVF of 12.9% of the total price your buyer pays, plus eBay's flat fee of 30 cents per order.

Read that again:  The Total Price Your Buyer Pays.

As an example, to keep the calculations simple, let's say a buyer in Los Angeles wins the book for $1.00 and pays $19.00 for the expedited shipping.  The buyer's sales tax is 10%, and California does not tax shipping costs.

So your buyer pays $1.00 for the book, plus $0.10 in sales tax on the cost of the book, plus $19.00 for shipping.  $1.00 + 0.10 + 19.00 = $20.10.  That's the total price paid by your buyer.   eBay's FVF is 12.9% of that total price: $20.10.

$20.10 x .129 = $2.59 + 0.30 = $2.89.  eBay will want to be paid $2.89 for showing your listing on this platform to a nationwide or worldwide market.   A book your buyer has paid One Dollar for.

It could be worse, though.  If you had listed the book in the Books category, the FVF is 14.6% plus 30 cents.

The Lesson is: do not list stuff for 99 cents.  No matter what eBay says.  I know they like to market 99 cents as starting bids for auctions, saying that's a good starting price.   But in reality and wa-a-a-a-ay too often, that starting price is also the ending price.

All that said -- and without reading what others may have responded to you -- I recommend you come back to this Selling community board at least a few times a week and read the posts.  It is a great source of experience and knowledge.

Good luck!

Re: Viewing status of an item I'm selling

Thanks !

I appreciate your thoughts.

I brought the book to the Post Office and they quoted me $10.  eBay's estimate was about $4.80, so I presume there is a cheaper way to ship.  Another problem.  I edited the listing to show the lower shipping cost, but the listing still shows $10.  (I figured if someone wants it and I can ship for less I'd just send them a refund.)

At this point there doesn't seem to be any interest in it anyway and I saw several other listings for the same book for only a few bucks.

This is my first foray into trying to sell on eBay.  I'm going to try to remove it.

Again, thanks for you wisdom !

Books are a tough sell, an oversaturated market on Ebay.  Unless it is book with little or no competition, and even then it will be slow to sell, it is best to find another category.

Apparently you didn't save the shipping cost change.

The PO clerk isn't going to quote you a price for Media Mail unless you tell her that it's a book and that you wan the cheapest cost.  You need to do some reading on shipping options instead of relying on the PO staff to make decisions for you, and if you're going to sell on eBay you'll need a scale, even a kitchen scale will do.

Re: Viewing status of an item I'm selling

Thanks!

Greatly appreciate your knowledge & advice.

I was going by eBay's recommendation of starting bidding at 99 cents.  Will know better next time and will just determine a price and put it up for sale.

Also, I thought my listing estimated shipping at $10.  A couple days ago I edited the listing to show shipping costs of $4.80 but couldn't get that amt. to show in the listing.  I went into the "live chat" & asked them to remove it.

Best regards and best of wishes in 2023 !
