Checks

Hello, I just put up my very first listing and got a message from a guy saying that he was interested in buying my item. He asked if I accepted cashier or certified checks as a form of payment. He also asked for my name and mailing address and to text it to a number he had sent me. I’m very new to ebay and can’t tell if this is a scam. Please help.

Re: Checks

Keep all transaction information in ebay. Do not take checks or give out personal information. Probably a scam since you are a new seller selling an expensive item. Also-since you are doing local pickup, have you tried FBM or CL to avoid scammers?

eBay reminds sellers constantly that taking payments outside eBay violates policy and is a scam.

Certified check or cashiers checks can be counterfeited just like a personal check.

If you text him, he will have your phone number and will send you all sorts of official looking text messages trying to trick you into shipping the item to the buyer before you find out the check is no good.

Re: Checks

Checks and cashiers checks are not acceptable forms of payment.

Sending a buyer your contact information will trigger the bots to believe you are conducting an off eBay transaction and will either receive a warning or be restricted from selling.
Keep your sales and payments on eBay.

Re: Checks

Scam. Keep all communication on eBay messages. It is a policy violation for buyers or sellers to share contact info prior to the sale. If he wants to buy it, he can do it thru the proper channels.

Re: Checks

Since you were uncertain about cashier's checks or certified checks,  it might be a good idea for you to perhaps re-read all the information eBay offers about selling here.

Re: Checks

Have you seen the eBay policy on how to handle the Local Pick Up sale? The link is below.

Re: Checks

I have tried FBM and I’m guessing CL is Craigslist? that I haven’t tried.

Re: Checks

Yes-that is CL. Ebay doesn't like us to name the competition.

^^^ Oh, yeah... you caught right on. If it's listed here, keep all messaging and payments here. Good for you and good luck.

Re: Checks

Go to Ebay help and learn how to block a buyer. This is a scam and you will only lose money and possibly your Ebay account.

You have a big target on your chest and it will remain there if you try to sell a big ticket item online.

Re: Checks

It's a scam attempt.

Local pickup with payment in cash (or Zelle) is the only way to protect yourself.

Re: Checks

Anyone who claims to have enough money to spend $1500 and doesn't have the ability to shop online with a bank card is not worthy of your time.  Do not text any buyer ever.  They can send you a fake email for payment.  Block the buyer and cease all communication.

Click on the block bidders link in the shortcuts section and add their user ID.
