Should Vehicle Tires Contain Identification Markers?

Vehicle tires are difficult to decompose in nature.  As a result, we struggle to get rid of these things and they can be a source of pollution.

I've had an idea for a while that would require that all vehicle tires on any vehicle that would carry either a registration or a title would be required to have those tires registered.  Inside of the tire tread compound would be identification markers that trace the tire back to the last registered owner.  Doing so would benefit everyone.  Here's a few ways.

  • Tires that are discarded illegally and inappropriately would be traced back to the last registered owner.  For proper removal and handling, the last registered owner would be charged $200 per tire for any tire found to be tossed aside without proper disposal.  If you paid a tire shop to discard your tires, then you should show that those had been handled properly and the tire shop would owe the $200 plus other costs to properly dispose of the tire.

  • Truck treads that come off big truck tires are dangerous.  Any truck tread would contain those same markers and a fee to remove the tire tread from the roadway would be $1,500 per tire.  Of course, the driver could also pick it up and avoid the fee.

I would venture to say that if you implemented this plan, you'd never see another improperly discarded tire of blown out tire tread on the highways.  Problem solved.

Re: Should Vehicle Tires Contain Identification Markers?

Hi

Yes, vehicle tires should contain identification markers. These markers would aid in tracking tire origin, usage, and maintenance history, which could improve safety, reduce fraud, and simplify recalls. Identification markers can also help in environmental tracking and ensure responsible disposal, supporting sustainable practices.

I have a salvage yard.  If I buy your car (along with your ID tires) you better hope I like you. LOL

Any tires imported would be checked at Customs for the markers.  These would be small magnetic pieces similar to what is in hotel room key cards that are spread throughout the tire compound.  Even fragments would be identifiable.

If you purchase a vehicle, then the tires still trace back to the last "registered owner".

Re: Should Vehicle Tires Contain Identification Markers?

What if I decide I don't like the tires and take them off and sell them privately, but not the vehicle?  Or my vehicle is totaled, but the tires are fine and are sold, again separate from the vehicle?

Re: Should Vehicle Tires Contain Identification Markers?

NO we can't make EVERYTHING traceable and we can't protect against everything.  Doing so just increases costs to buyers like us.   I have no idea what tags would cost but using airtags by Apple as an example, looks like cost of the tag would be over $10 each.  That doesn't include the additional cost to convert manufacturing machinery over to include multiple tags per tire.

Re: Should Vehicle Tires Contain Identification Markers?

Cali charges a fee when a tire is purchased

Anyone can take a tire to any tire store for 'trash'

Tires are ground and used in Cali to make Asphalt for roads/road repair.

Ground tires can also used for playground surfaces here in British Columbia.  Soft and a with a little give, and much safer than wood chips which can hide gawsh-nose-what.
