Re: SCAM???

I complain about the youngest generation in my fambly- young men- teens and early 20's- who can't change a set of brake pads on the cars they drive. Instead, they take it to a franchise place, where it is uber-expensive (Is Uber expensive? What about Lyft?) and just put the several-hunnert-dollar bill on a CREDIT CARD (I didn't get my first credit card till I was 39- and only so I could order stuff on the interwebz!).....so I look upon them with disgust...and then I see their fathers...men my own age, who also can't change a set of brake pads!!!!! How did these people get in my fambly?

Utterly helpless and hopeless. The day the smartphones cease working....they will just sit in a corner and ramble on to themselves incoherently..... (But their mothers were on Facebook bragging of how their kids got all of these awards in school, and did all of these fabulous things. One could lift 400 lbs. on the weight machine. 'course he can't lift 100 lbs. in a shop...)

Re: SCAM???

@legitimate_bidder

Bar maid told me her car had went all wobby.

I ask what work she had done on the car.

She said new front tires.

I said jack the car up and tighten the lug nuts.

She has a "mechanic" look at the car.

He drives it, and both front tires fall off.

I made my girl change a tire before she started drivers ed.

Re: SCAM???

There was a guy in my aircraft mechanics class way back when.

He did not know how to change his oil.

We all said why in the **** are you here.

He said he was not going to be a grease monkey.

He was going to be management.

Great someone who can't do the job, in charge of the people who can do the job.

Re: SCAM???

@mr.elmwood

My boss hired a guy for my shop ( with no input from me )

So I told him to clean the gunk tank.

He said "why do I have to clean the gunk tank"

well, because I am the boss and you are not.

He never became a mechanic

I hired a 13 year old kid.

first job was sweeping the floor.

( I had no clue what he could do )

He is now in his 30's

and he has his own business.

Re: SCAM???

The story from sockmonkeydave reminds me of an ex brother-in-law of mine. This clown went to aircraft school and got his A & P license. I have no idea in the world how he did this unless he paid the examiner off. He had the IQ of a box of turnips.

He couldn't change the oil in his cars (always had it done at a fast lube) and anytime repairs were needed he brought them to me; even for the very simple stuff.

At one point he moved to Texas and got a job at General Dynamics building F-16s............

Re: SCAM???

Back to the hi-jacked version of this thread. My electric furnace was not working correctly. One or more elements were staying on in the off position. I traced it to a burnt sequincer. Sunday morning, late winter, no-one here wants to work, nowhere to get what I need. Except.

I put on my galooshes and go down the street and see Barry. Barry is an electrician. He has the part on hand and will only take $20 off of me. I go home, take out the old, put in the new, make a new connecting wire to replace the burnt one.

Up and down, $20, twenty minutes.

Re: SCAM???

Not really. House is insulated good enough. Manitoba has the lowest or second lowest electricity rates in North America.

This is not my forever home. To switch to gas, I would never make the cost back.

@mr.elmwood @jr-41ford

When Prez Obama was giving away new windows, and fridges and heaters.

Well I was poor, and I said yes, thank you sir.

The heater stopped working, seems they have about a dozen sensors.

And one is for air flow, the filter was covered in cat hair.
