Possible scam?

I've contacted someone through Craigslist with a really nice 4-wheeler for sale.  After contacting her, they said that they have given the 4-wheeler to Ebay motors to sell for them and if I send them my name, address and email address, they will contact ebay motors to get the sale initiated and ship the unit to me for free.

This sounds way to good to be true and was wandering if anyone else has encountered something like this before.

Thanks for you input!

Re: Possible scam?

Definite Scam. Ebay has nothing to do with anything found on another site. Also remember that anyone asking to be paid in gift cards is a scammer.

Re: Possible scam?

Lots of people have encountered that sort of deal.   In fact, we see 3 or 4 questions about such a deal every day here on the forums.   About every two weeks or so, some poor soul comes here wandering why his vehicle hasn't arrived yet and why the seller is no longer answering emails.

Re: Possible scam?

Scam is their husband or son died and it brings back  sad memories, so that's why it is so cheap. They make it sound like you are doing them a favor. This scam has been going on for over 8 years and people still fall for it. The phone number goes to the scammers and they pick up in 4 seconds.  Try to get eBay right now.... hours to talk to someone and that's if your lucky.

Not applicable

Every transaction that begins on another website (craigslist, facebook marketlplace, offerup, letgo, etc) and the "seller" tells you it will be completed on eBay is a scam, 100% of the time.  There are no exceptions to this rule.

The bait is the super low price, way below normal for a like item.

The scammer almost always claims to be a woman who (take your pick) is recently widowed, recently divorced and got the vehicle in the divorce, recently lost a child and the vehicle belong to the child and brings back sad memories, or the seller is getting deployed and cannot take care of the transaction, so eBay is doing it for her.

The scammer will tell you that it will be handled by eBay with eBay's buyer protection plan

The item is already in eBay's possession and it will be shipped to you at no cost to you.  And you have five days to decide if you want to keep it.  If you decide to not keep it, return shipping is also free.

The scammer will likely tell you that you have to pay with gift cards.  The scammer will also tell you that eBay will hold the money until you decide if you want to keep it and only then will the money be released to the scammer.

The problem is, when you give the card numbers to the scammer, your money is gone forever and it is impossible to trace.

Would you sell something for a fraction of its cost and ship it for free?  Would you want to be paid in gift cards?

My suggestion is that you flag the ad on craigslist and stop all correspondence with the scammer.  There is no 4 Wheeler, only pictures of one that the scammer lifted off the internet

This is one of the oldest scams here on eBay. Avoid this at all costs or it will end up costing you! So glad you didn't fall for this scam.

Anyone that asks you to pay with gift cards is scamming you. The sellers next step if you agree is to send you a dummy "invoice" that will really look like it came from eBay, asking you to pay with gift cards to have the vehicle/trailer shipped to you for a free evaluation period. The seller will take the numbers from them and cash out and you will not be able to get you money back! Then the seller disappears.

The seller may even try to be more convincing by saying that eBay will send it from their warehouse. eBay has no warehouse and does not ship vehicles. eBay does not handle such transactions. So this statement is a lie.

A vehicle/trailer should be sold through eBay and not a different site. When sold on eBay you will have some protection. Usually, what happens is that you have to pay a deposit. After the deposit, you then make arrangements to meet the seller to inspect the vehicle/trailer and if satisfied you will pay the seller the remaining amount. Never pay for the vehicle in full prior to your meeting no matter what.

I would advise that you report this ad to the site that you found it on to try and get it removed.

You can also report the ad to:

Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) www.ic3.gov

Hope this helps!
