Train Conmunications

Before the trains had radios the engineer and the brakeman communicated with different kinds of signals. Does anybody know what the codes were for the train whistles, and the signals the brakeman gave back with his lantern? Is there anybody in the group who has a radio scanner to listen to train traffic? I have one but have no Idea where to get the frequencies they use. Chuck 🙂

As far as lantern or hand signals, here is a link I found. http://www.thortrains.net/handtalk.htm I don't have a scanner as there are no trains on the rock anymore. Besides, I thought it was illegal to havw scanners in the wake of 911. SmileyCentral.com

Wish I had a scanner as I would have a`better idea of when trains are coming to hang out longer to catch them. It's frustrating to go out hoping to catch some trains only to not see any. And then the minute you leave several come along. couple hundred bucks for a scanne that will be used sparatic, or use the money on the layout or out in the garage.. the scanner loses... perhaps someday.. Chuck, check with model train shops. I think I may have seen some sort of trainspotting guide. Also and mostly, google it. I am sure someone has scanner freqs posted on a website somewheres. scanner-less D

Chuck Look at this site and go through the various links and you will find more information than you can use http://www.trainweb.com/radio/ Just Google "Railroad radio frequencies" and you will come up with 219,000 sites plus to look at. Not all are railroad but an awful pile of them are. Jack

Chuck If you go to the bottom listing of the above link you can click on the railroad audio.net link and listen to different railroads as they work. Jack

Jack, What about my concern. Aren't scanners illegal now? and yet you are telling me I can go on line and hear trains moving and locate them, etc.? I haven't tried the link yet, but I will. Some security in the US, huh. B-) & :x

Pete I don't know what the restrictions if any are in place in the USA, but if you go to Radio Shack.Com they list 23 scanners for sale from $100.00 to $800.00. I do know you can still buy them here in Canada. The only restriction That I know of is the frequency of the crystals for the units. Certain frequencies such as military and certain secret police channels. Other than that just try the above channels and listen to different railroads working. I listened to Amtrack and one out in the Vancouver area. Sometimes there is a long span of time before you hear anything and then you might get twenty minutes before silence again. Don't forget to turn up your sound when listening. Jack

Pete, I just did some sniffing around on the web. hope this helps ya.. Now...the info is only as accurate as those that punch the stuff up onto the web. >>one point to notice, read things carefully as the laws can be ambigious to special scanners such as radar detectors, ham radios,etc.. Also is the fact, is the scanner being used to commit a crime. One one site stated this; LAW UPDATE!!! MICHIGAN LAW UPDATED - Bill making scanner use in Michigan no longer illegal unless used in furtherance of a crime has been passed and made actual law. So use of a scanner while mobile in Michigan is legal. However, I found a site that said the contrary. For a list of states and their status click on; http://www.afn.org/~afn09444/scanlaws/scanner5.html dave Never thought to look into actual prices of scanners, perhaps I might get one saomday then if they are affordable.

Thanks all for all the info. Scanners are legal in Florida l isten to police calls, fire Dept, air traffic control, and the drivers at Daytona when the races are in town. I know I would not here any train traffic unless an engineer would be talking while in this area. But if I ever get off my butt and go do some train spotting I think it would be neat to listen to them. Thanks again. Chuck 🙂

I like to get of my butt and go train spotting with the video camera, our traffic is nothing like the stuff you all get to see but it certainly is nice to waste a couple of hours on a nice grassy patch and even if you only get to video about 20 minutes worth, it's still worth it, fresh air and trains what could be better, and the closest trainspotting I can do is about three hours drive from my place. Barry...visualising again 😉
