The Daily Moose

Here is a link to Bar Mills Models on-line newspaper and information station. Art has 4 new on-line videos that you might find interesting. The first two are about Bar Mills Models itself. The next two are instructive videos. One on different types of glues and their use and the other on the new Bar Mills weathering powders. There are also pictures of some of the kits available. Enjoy. http://barmillsmodels.com/dailymoose_05A_05.html

Re: The Daily Moose

This rally car kit I'm building required some bright green (dodge sassy grass green or go light green- know what I mean) for part of the hood and rear spoiler. Couldn't get it int he city here at any shop. Had to find a seller on ebay that had it and would ship to canada. Paid more for shipping than the darn jar of paint.

Now I want some Testors metalizer 'burnt iron' to use as a base color under some nail polish and of course can't get the metalizers here due to our stupid laws.   Can't seem to get the kawasaki green from tamiya here either for a kawasaki bike kit.

That's prob my biggest beef with modelling hobby in canada is trying to get certain paints.   This UK biz called hiroboy won't ship paints anymore  outside europe/uk.   I hate going for the close enuf shade when replicating a certain car/bike. I want the exact proper color for the project.  Always see projects where people use Mr Surfacer and Valejo paints, etc and no one carries that stuff. espec the brands that are popular in Japan like gunze Sangayo? Mr Hobby, etc.

I'm glad you can use the acrylic paints at Michaels Pete for your RR. If you were into car kits like Barry and I you'd go postal on the rock.   Ya probably do anyways.

They even carry Professional auto art acryl paint. Been watching some videos on you tube on those.

Glad I don't live back in greenwood. Cripe!s couldn't get crap there.

Re: The Daily Moose

Dave, you know what is really stupid, I have recently bought Pactra RC paint from the states and at decent prices, I can't find it in Australia and the only guy that used to have it wouldn't post it for any amount, I have bought Tamiya paint from Japan with out any problems, and unless Testors has dropped the metalizers along with all the other hobby paints they decided to do away with you should be able to get them in the US fairly easily, when I want a silver base I check the auto shops for spray touch up paint, I suppose you should be able to get that somewhere, it is acrylic base and nearly every thing goes over it, I always used to have a gallon or two on the shelf when I was mixing and spraying cars but not any more, I have also bought candy paint from Poland at really good prices and cheap post, it should all depend if you buy acrylic instead of enamel as far as safety for air travel.

Re: The Daily Moose

Just got my new Micro Mark catalog and I see they have a new line of paints to replace the Pollyscale discontinued railroad colors. They are acrylic of course. I wonder if they will make more kinds of paint in the future.

We can get Tamiya paints up here at the LHS. Surprise! She also carries some other off the wall brand paints in tiny cans about 1/4 ounce that I can't remember the name of. I am using the craft acrylics because they don't smell and cover wood well. They suck on plastic though and for that I still use the rattle cans from Testors or Tamiya.

I can't ship any paints in without paying HAZMAT fees. Most suppliers like Micro Mark will not even ship the stuff. Same for CA. Will not ship it to Canada. So I have to get it at the LHS and she doesn't carry the brand I like. Rats!

Re: The Daily Moose

the little cans will possibly be humbrol and are enamel, to get a decent color coverage out of Tamiya acrylic you really need to invest in an air brush, you can get aerosol propelent but a small hobby compressor would probably be best for your purposes, they really are not hard to master and you would soon get great results, Tamiya is reasonably cheap and the propper thinners are cheap enough too, I was told once that water is a suitable reducer for Tamiya but the thinners is the way to go, go on have a go, you won't go back once your used to it.

Re: The Daily Moose

I will look into the paint # barry. Thanks.

What I did years ago after seeing what a badger air compressor goes for, I bought a DeVilbiss 3gal 1.5HP compressor from Costco for less  and can use it around the shop too. Doubling it use.Ok so it's noisy but the cost and multipurpose outweighs the con.

Pete, Barry is correct. you can get basic airbrushes that are easy to use, and using acrylics means it is so quick and easy to clean after use. When I first tried using acylics I couldn't believe how much quicker it was to clean the brush versus testor petro based enamels.   airbrushing acrylics don't smell. dry quicker.

Barry I use isopropyl alcohol for thinning my tamiya acryl bottle paints.  probably the most recommended method. And it is cheaper than buying the tamiya thinner that if you smell it, it smells like isopropyl alcohol.

Tamiya paints are NOT cheap here at Gooch's hobby.  colors go for like $16 after tax and the primer is something aroound $19.

Re: The Daily Moose

$16 unbelievable, what a rort, if you check ebay for Tamiya paint it is about $3.50 including post, that is to Australia but I really can't see it would be any dearer to you guys, there is a new hobby shop in Tamworth with a full range of Tamiya for about $5 or close to, the post from ebay takes a couple of weeks but gets here to the door, I usually call into the hobby shop when we have to go the the specialists but if I want anything in a hurry my granddaughter lives in Tamworth and she gets it and sends it over, I usually don't just get one thing as the post is a little dear here, like I said if I'm not in too much of a hurry I buy it of ebay.

We don't have ready access to the isopropal alchohol here, maybe if I knew what it is used for I could track it down, I see it mentioned in all the train related articles in hobby mags but have never found it.

I thought a hobby compressor would be OK for Pete as they are only small and really quiet, just right for a basement, the bigger compressors are great if you have a garage or workshop my little paint area is 35' by 60' so the compressor doesn't take up much room.

Re: The Daily Moose

I finally found isopropyl alcohol and seems it is used in the making of illicit drugs so not readilly available, I can get it from a couple of mail order sites, one I have dealt with from time to time, looks like I can get some to try after all.

Re: The Daily Moose

Barry, Isopropal alcohol here is sold as Rubbing Alcohol in the drug store. It is either 70% or 90% and cheap. We find it in the first aide section.

You are right about the Humbrol cans. She also stocks the paints from Model Shipways.

I'll stick to brushes and ratttle cans. I don't do that much plastic to warrant an air brush set up and I don't have a good area for a hood. I do the can painting outside in the basement stairwell when it is not windy. The overspray just colors the drainage rocks under the deck.

Man LOL

Re: The Daily Moose

Barry, I should clarify this. The prices I gave were for the spray cans.   I think the little jars of acryl paint are still damn near $4.50/bottle.

I've seen one seller that was selling your choice of 10 colors  (bottles) for $35 with free shipping from Hong Kong. I would go that route for the colors I use frequently (blacks, titanium silver, aluminum, etc)

The Humbral jars apparently brush on nicely and I don't believe they need to be thinned for airbrush. I've never used them before so I can't verify that.

I can't believe how many decades I was used (forced?)  to using just Testors enamels and their Model Master line which was all petro based paints. Stinky jar of varsol for cleaning the brushes. Thick frikken spray paint too. yuch.  Now the only testors I use are the stockpile of metallizers I picked up over the years.

No shame if I can't get them anymore as I've tried the Alclad II paints and like those for the realistic metal finishes.

Why is Polly scale being discontined? It was acrylic to begin with!!   I could understand the floquil side as it was oil based.

Reason I mentioned a regular comressor is what the better hobby compressors go for, you can buy a small 3/4 hp compressor fr=or less $$. And then if you need it to fill a leaky tire on your car you can use it.  Mine is 1.5 HP with 3 gal tank and you can still carry it with one hand so not big/heavy.   They are just noisy while the tank is filling which only takes a coupel minutes. Once full I turn the switch off so it can't automatically reharge.  With 125 PSI in tank, you can do a lot of spraying and cleaning brush out  before it gets down to 20 psi.

The cans of propellants for the airbrushes are rubbish. They get so cold after use, and once cold, they lose pressure until can is warmed up.

some hobby compressors I've seen that don't have any tank at all, pulsate when you spray so that affects the quality when the spray pattern is intermittent from the pulsing. I've encountered that once when I borrowed a compressor when I was living in the barracks

when I was much younger.

If your current method works Pete, that's all that matters. Your lucky in that sense. spray cans don't work so well for painting N scale shell. doesn't take much to start covering over detail.

Re: The Daily Moose

Pete, we don't have drug stores here and pharmacys don't carry any component that can be used for drug making, supermarkets are just a waste of time, it seems isopropyl alcohol is sometimes used in mold making, I have made a few molds over the years and that is the site I found it.

Humbrol is a very old English paint and is enamel and that is why it is easy to brush paint, I used to brush paint model cars in the 60s and 70s using humbrol and the finish was shiny and really smooth looked almost spray finish, there is no way you can spray out of the tin, it has to be thinned like any enamel usually 10% thinners (super grade petrol worked real good)

I know Tamiya spray cans work well but there is so often the cans are out of stock but nearly always bottles are available, I just thought you would get a great deal of satisfaction out of being able to spray all your goodies with a whole lot more blending of colors with out great amounts of overspray. I often use cans of auto touch up spray, way more variety of colors than tamiya and usually nice metalic mix for custom car finishing.

Re: The Daily Moose

Dave, I have a water trap air regulator in my air line and airbrush at 45 psi, as I have said before I used to spray cars in my shed so every thing is set up from then, my compressor runs at about 200psi sort of a bit much for an airbrush and there is no way I could carry it around LOL.

Re: The Daily Moose

Can't get iso alcohol even in a pharmacy there? wow!   I thought it was bad here in Winnipeg of having to ask for the rubbing alcohol as it is kept behind the counter. (due to aboriginals drinking it, along with lysol and everything else-welcome to canada)

I can't even remember who else sold Humbral in the city here other than the LHS that closed down.

I can't mix colors to save my life. It's easier to buy some tamiya italian red spray and decant it and airbrush it than to be trrying to match paint and then hope I have enough for the job. Stuff like taking aluminum and adding a drop of black to get a different shade so everything isn't the same shade of aluminum (under a car chassis) I can do, just not skilled at matching paint to a paint sample chart thingy, you know those paper strips you get a hardware store for paint samples.

I have a rack on the wall with a crap load of tamiya jars so  I'll grab those and thin and airbrush away.

What I do find satisfyiing airbrushing itself, like usiing a dual action airbrush so that you can control the paint flow and fade colors easily, etc.

I am always surprised of some techniques used by armour modellers. Some of them actually mask off the colors, whereas with a D/A airbrush, you could feather the edges gently. (unless it was a camo pattern with sharp borders)

another thing that's odd. is car modellers paint parts separatly where tank modellers will build up  a lot of the tank before painting. (this include parts that will be a different color) but I guess if they can win awards for their tank then who am I to question.

He he he, I guess someone would get upset if you made your own alcohol while you were busy making wine and stuff...

All the best,

Re: The Daily Moose

if it tastes anything like alcohol wipes ( I have them because I am diabetic) which are saturated in isopropyl alcohol (another useless bit of information) YUCK, our indigenous citezens prefer methilated spirits ( makes you breath heavily just smelling it) I do know it does an excellent job of removing the original paint on all the train cars I have wanted to strip and repaint, cleans all the messy bits in N scale locos too, then if you play too much it also lifts the skin on your hands, this has happened often LOL, I know you should use latex gloves I just haven't been able to find any big enough for my hands.
