I saw Cdn side of Niagara Falls back in like summer of '90? The Falls was neat but the Cdn side aka the town was a complete tourist trap and dump.
If travelling plans ever happened down south east, I'd love to see the mammoth caves (is it) is Tennesee.
Otherwise I wanna go back to Wyoming to see coal trains!

I'm surprised Dave. The Canadian Falls, aka Rainbow Falls, is beautiful. There is a wonderful park there too. Now if you only went into the town of Niagara Falls, Ont. I can see where you might call it a tourist trap. What do you expect for the Honeymoon Capital of the World?

Pete,
Cool, we went up 219, through Salamanca and according to our GPS trail in Streets & Trips we went right past Hamburg. If we had known we could have waved as we went by!! How about that! The view of the Canadian side of Niagara looks like a bunch of high-rise casinos, so we will look for the park by the falls like you say.
All the best,
Charles

Yea that's what I meant Pete was the town itself was scummy feeling, the area around the falls was nice. Amazing the amount of water that falls over the edge. I got vertigo watching the water rush by and then drop. One nasty current. I remember going through the caves and there was an opening where you can see the falls.
On the topic of water elsewhere, Hoover Dam is cool also to visit.

Oh yea. I returned to work this week. took things slow. Beings I couldn't do a fitness test in March and advised against doing it form the specialist, I won't be able to have my 6 month F/T contract so I am only able to do 12 days/month as part time reservist.
My stomach is still messed up. It's funny, We had bbq steak and wine last sunday. well that Monday my stomach was the best it felt in a week. Tues I went to work and felt great, made a pepper beef stir fry (bean sprouts and veggies from a can with powder spice mix) and bam! back to bloated and in pain and only walk a shirt distance before stomach muscles tighten up.
had bbq ribs and wine last night and wasn't bloated afterwards. This A.M feeling ok.
Seemed like I was healthier when I was killing myself with my dietary lifestyle. Up until March, I was drinking a can of coke almost every day, chips every sunday watching racing. chips odd time thru week. Beer almost every weekend, wine 2-3 times a week. All kinds of bbq meat. home made deep fried chicken wings and chips aka our weekend pub night....with more beer. always some form of chocolae in the house. Over winter having some brandy later in evening.
I cut back on wine and couple years ago, my ankle had some sort of arthritic flair up.
This March was the start of my respritory disease. I quit coca cola cold turkey. Didn't have much heavy meat in April/may/june.
maybe 2 bags of chips in june.
Now supposedly issues with gallbladder. plus the wonderful incurable resp disease.

Must cut the grass today. The berries on the mountain ash are turning red already. I hope this doesn't mean an early winter.
I took a break from railroading and am building a small boat model. It is not turning out that well since I haven;t done a boat in a long time. So it will be a practice model and not for show. It was cheap anyway.
Maybe I'll have to change the oil and put a new spark plug on the snow blower soon. The HORROR of it all!

I'm not looking forward to winter this year as my spring/summer season was shortened by 2 months due to being short of bed ridden.
Did my 3 days this week so no I'm off until tuesday. Going railfanning with a buddy that just retired from air force so he's enjoying the change. Sat morning wifee & I take off for Fargo for weekend, Hoping to get in some extra railfanning. SHe's pretty good about it.
She enjoys the road trips.

Enjoy the trip. Kim and I have been looking into retirement places. Elliott Lake looks good so far. We need to get off this island.

Had unexpected company last night for dinner. Family from out of town who called in the late afternoon and informed us they were on their way over for a visit. So what did we do but feed thwm of course. Now we are exhausted. Just can't get up the necessary joy in entertaining any more. does this mean we officially old? I made a quick lasagne and Ceaser salad. We have lots of left-overs for us now. Next time it will be delivered pizza.

Got back last night. We didn't bother with Bismarck for a couple reasons. We spent Sat-Mon in Fargo with a side trip on sunday to Valley City and Jamestown.
Wife enjoyed the sidetrip. I enjoyed spending the extra day in Fargo instead of the normal overnighters we do. Man was it HOT & HUMID down there.
Took nealry 200 pictures. (few pics of non-trains stuff. Saw all sorts of foreign motive power and NS fallen flag schemes.

Went to pick up wife at work so going down hiway appraoching intersection at 730 pm so sunset is bright. I could make out the iight was yellow and the fullsize pickup 2 cars ahead was stopping for the yellow. I started to brake so no sense of panic. The car infront of me (full of young guys) did not notice the yellow or sense the truck right in front of them was stopping, so I knew this was gonna be interesting. Sure enough, hear the tires squeal, car wiggled, pair of skid marks and smashy smashy. They rear ended the truck. Barely even moved the truck. A few seconds later steam starts venting out the hood of the car. I start to giggle. Light turned green so I had to get in other lane to get around this bender. As I went past, I could see the damage. Truck had a chrome bumper that did not appear to be dented, the car (which was a honda 4 door) had the front end pushed in and the hood all buckled. I then roared with laughter for the next couple of miles to the mall.
And that is why I like driving a pick up truck.
yea, I'm evil.

You are evil! Came home to brown water I bet. Saw the story on the news this morning.

Things are really slow around here again. I seems all the groups are having trouble getting members to post. I wonder if it has anything to do with the difficulty getting into the community and the new format. It also seems that there are fewer "cottage" sellers out there. It is mostly "stores" now and the real fun (?) of a bidding war is gone. There aren't a lot of real deals here anymore in my opinion. You have to look real hard to find them.
09-30-2013 05:04 AM
I totally agree Pete. A lot of the ebay stores are charging retail prices if not more. Thre's some "stores" that are selling such and such loco with DCC ready for $140 when every other listing shows it listed for 79-109 for example. I've seen bike models that run $25+ and then there would be a seller listing the same bike for $54. I gotta wonder if they do that on purpose so no one will buy it (they don't pay selling fees then) and just use it for the sole purpose of having an ebay store to advertise their real brickmorter store business.
So much BIN items too.
Another thing I haven't seen for years is dutch auctions. Now those you could get a good deal.
Ebay was a hidden gem before 2002ish or so. As soon as ads showed up on tv the bubble burst.
I wish I was into model RR before 2000 like when I was buying other stuff, but then what was out for for industry standard I'd be selling it all by now ad buying quality. It was bad enuf when I didn't know too much and bought locos that I eventually turned around and sold due to stuff like truck mounted couplers on locos, non DCC ready, etc.
On other news, today is supposed to be last day for Elmwood LHS. The original owner would be rolling in his grave if he saw this. His former partner who sold his share in ealry 2000s is still alive and quite sad and disgusted to see the direction store took in past year. But that's what happens when you have idiots inherit the business.

I still buy stuff on ebay because where I live there is no hope of buying anything I want, and even some stores that are selling for list or close is still cheaper than trying to get it from any of the hobby shops in Australia, I have been buying diecast cars recently and paying around $100 US for cars that sell for $300 to $400 here, our dollar has dropped again but not any where near what I would lose trying to shop locally, even buying stuff my wife likes is generally cheaper on ebay and it is delivered to the door, closest shops for her kind of stuff is a 300klm round trip, so $9 delivered for a pair of leggings compared to $30-$40 plus $40 for gas for the same thing, I'll stick to ebay even without the bidding excitement...
