Anybody have any good tips on soldering? I have no problem putting a few wires together but am thinking of a brass kit that would require soldering. Any tricks to it??? Mike

MLK? Do we have a new member? Oh, Mikey! Are you stuck on teacher? Your English went right out the window in that last post. How many sheets to the wind are we tonight? I'm going to say it and you can't stop me. Maybe we should put a sock on this tip discussion....... ;) CodFadda

Hey Everybody, On the subject of soldering, there is a great article in the most recent issue of "N Scale Railroading", Sep/Oct, on page 20. Check it out at your favorite LHS. Pete the Librarian

Mike, There is an article on Photoetched Brass Buildings in this October's Model Railroader, pg. 88. This author uses CA for assembly, but there are some other good ideas in the article. Pete

What's up with the "cool" soldering method? Have been seeing a small pocket size soldering devise that is battery operated that heats up instantly and cools just as fast. These have been advertised on TV lately and was wondering what the difference was and if there is a place for these in the hobby. They are only around 20 bucks. prof

"Cool Soldering"? I haven't seen it. Of course we do not get the US ads much up here in the frozen north. How many watts? Who makes? Where can we get it? Typical questions now that you teased us Mike. HELP!!!!! Gramps

Prof, I've seen them advertised, but have done zero "leg-work" on them. It sounds like one of those "as seen on TV - too good to be true" things, but I'm talking out my butt. That being said, we all know how much heat you need to melt solder. I realize technology is a wonderful thing, but how does it work? We need to launch an investigation immediately! Imagine the corn-veen-yence!!!!! Marc

I've seen the ads too and haven't investigated. Sounded like a good stocking stuffer for my Pop-in-Law. BUT also sounded too good to be true. Fred - and I saw it advertised in Canada.

Here's a link I just found. There are tons of them, just do a basic "cool soldering" search. https://www.asseenontvnetwork.com/vcc/coldheat/coldheat/115818/ DZ

I just jumped right in a bought one from a seller here on ebay for $14.99. The seller is in Canada, hooray, so I will not have to pay that dreaded 15% HST. I'll let you all know how I like it after I get and use it. I'm also a tool freak. B-)

Pete, Please keep us informed. I was going to get one but will wait for your review. Sounds too good to be true. 800 degrees in one second and cools to room temp in 3 seconds. And now the really hard part to believe, uses 4 AA batteries that they say will last for 700 solder joints!!! The link Dot furnished looks like a nice one with different tips available. As a side note, this company has plans on this technology for heating your car up in the winter and other outdoor uses such as heating tents on camping trips etc. Might be worth an investment if we can find them on the stock market and do a little research. I know my wife would sure buy a product that would give her a nice toasty warm car instantly during the winter months. prof

Denise has been bugging me for Christmas hints for family. At that price, I think I'll drop the hint for a family member. Not too expensive...and if it works as advertised, a great gift! Marc
