Anybody have any good tips on soldering? I have no problem putting a few wires together but am thinking of a brass kit that would require soldering. Any tricks to it??? Mike

The one I bought is the same as the link Dot provided, but I was able to avoid the international shipping this time. $14.99 plus $5.00 for shipping isa steal for me. Reading the site, the nearest I can figure out is that there are two elecrodes that make up the soldering tip. They are talking about a spark or arc at the tip. Not being an electronic expert, I don't know what this means or how it really generates the heat. It is rated at 25 to 50 Watts and can reach 1000F if left on in place. It is therefore not recommended for electronic work. Sounds like a mini arc welder actually. If you go into the site and read the FAQs you will get an idea of its limitations. I'll keep you all informed. B-)

Pete, You say not for electronic work. Would that include our under the platform work, power feeds and rail joints? Or are you talking PC boards, etc? Marc

I think they are concerned about PC boards and such that might be affected by an electric spark, short or jolt. Should be fine for soldering feeders to track as long as your locos are not on the track when you solder. Might affect DCC more than DC though. We shall see when it comes. B-)

I wonder if it could be kitbashed into an arc welder inside the welding shop on the layout? Punk

Doug, I have one in my foundry building. It is Faller part #272-180640 Welding Flash Module $45 in Walthers. Circuitron also makes two: 800-5841 and 800-5842 at $20 each. Then there is the GRS Ultimate Arc Welder 296-1013 at $40. Always glad to do research for you guys. B-)

Received the "Cool Soldering" tool today. Not much power as I feared. It will solder small wires and tin wire and it might work on N scale track, but it will not solder feeders to HO scale track, be they tined or not. It might be the nuts for soldering brass kits though. My humble opinion, save it for jewelry work or Heath kits. (Remember those?) B-)

See the thread about ending your bus wires Fred. There are many suggestions in there. Fluxing and Wicking = FUN! Jack, remember the crystal radio sets you could make that looked like a rocket ship? They had an ear piece so you could hear one and if you were lucky maybe two AM stations. I actually made an AM broadcasting station once from a kit. Don't think it was a Heath, but something else. It broadcast on 640 or 1240, the Civil Defense channels, who remembers those, but only for about a 1/4 mile. It was cool to bring my date home and listen to the music I had playing on the radio parked out front of the house. It was a much simpler time back then remember and we had simpler tastes in what was actually fun. I also made a clock radio from a kit that worked all through my high school years and on into college until the tubes died and there were no more available. I think I just rambled on a bit there. Sorry, but at times it is good to reminisce. Gramps

My brother, Trevor, used to make the Crystal radio kits. He also made a broadcast station and we would broadcast to our buddies in the neighbouring houses. (too young to "car date" in those days) . CHIM - Chimpanzee Radio. CHUM was (still is) a major AM station in Toronto and now owns hundreds of TV and Radio stations across Canada. My other brother Mike was best buddies with the owner's son who now runs the Canadian version of MTV. (Much Music) Fred - speaking of rambling
