Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Dot, if you want to make the layout movable, why not look into N-Trak modules. http://www.ntrak.org/man2pg.pdf http://www.ntrak.org/ You can also create your own movable dominoes that can be reused. Send me your room dimensions if you want to and I'll try to help you design again. A closet is a great place for a helix to gain altitude up to that second level. The second level can also be movable by setting the modules on top of shelf brackets. The lower level can be 24" deep and the upper should be about 16" to 18" deep. I'm full of ideas....... B-)

Progress report #2

Started laying cork in the indust park. A buddy played with Atlas track software to see what he could come up with. I like his first idea he had so went with that. He dropped by last night so we plotted flex track, trying to tweak a couple areas. We then came up with an idea and location for a small modern engine house for the park switchers. I also started a walthers 3in1 kit to make the backside of my brewery plant (as it was originally built as low relief) Also started a pikestuff prefab warehouse for the brewery car receiving building. Just a bit of multi tasking/projects as once, but need to so some of this so I can plan cork/track in these areas. Once the park has a bit more track down I will take some photos. -- Edited by dl85vette at 06/27/2009 7:24 AM PDT

Progress report #2

I haven't done much lately, too damn cold and my back has been aching badly, I did get a GP60 just waiting for it to arrive, I have thought about starting the cab design work but that means going to the train room, I did recently get all the decals I have been waiting for and the three freshly painted units do have one side each decaled, I will have to go out there and turn them over to do the other sides LOL.I got one of the RC Santa Fe red autoracks and they really are something to see so I bought another, it's coming with the GP60, hopefully be here during the week. ]:)

It was fairly warm today so I went to the train room and pulled up a length of track and a bridge that I have been contemplating modifing for a while, now I hope it isn't too cold tomorrow so I can get it fixed again, I know the curve will be a whole lot better now and shouldn't keep lifting the front wheels on the first freight car, maybe! ]:) Just how cold does it get down there? Quite often -16c over night and we have had 5c to 8c during the day recently and not the middle of winter yet, we don't get snow, it's usually too cold to snow. The damage in my back is way worse with cold weather and just plain painful in the hot weather, we humans are never satisfied or happy with our lot are we. ]:) Too cold to snow?? in Australia??? -40C is too cold to snow mate. In all honesty, I didn't realize it got in the minus for temps down there. wow. I always thought winter there was single digits on the plus side. -- Edited by dl85vette at 06/29/2009 3:50 PM PDT For those of you who live in the real world of F temps: -16C = 3.2F 5C = 41 It's summer here in Newfyland and we get highs of 26C = 78.8F. Today it is only 16C = 60.8F and Dave's Winterpeg -40C = -40F. Really. All I know for sure is that if it is minus temp in either C or F it's cold. B-) -- Edited by ginzokid at 06/30/2009 4:08 AM PDT

I started the GP60M build today, most of the cut down is done and I have done quite a bit of the cab customizing, I am doing this one slightly different to the first one, on the first I cut the front part of the walkway and tool boxes of the original frame and replaced them with the whole front section from an Atlas SD60 walkway, this time I'm leaving the walkway as is and modifying the cab sides to suit, it will give me the front tool box doors that are missing on the other one, I didn't even know they had the extra door until I found a really clear photo of the side,I'm not going to modify the other cab as it is nicely painted and staying that way, both engines will still have the headlights in the middle of the nose, I can't see the advantage of all the work needed to move them slightly to the left, if I was looking for brownie points I might but they are for my railroad and I am happy with how they look. ]:)

The GP60M is well under way, the main body is stripped and so is the walkway, the cab is fully modified and just needs the final sanding, all being well tomorrow it will be ready for paint, so hopefully by the end of the week it should be finished and ready for work, so far I am very happy with the outcome, I don't dare look at the other one, I know I should put front tool box doors on it, who knows maybe some day. ]:)

Tool car is finished. I haven't bothered to take any pictures though. I have also been busy building the village for the tree layout. I bought a set of Dover cardstock cut out buildoings to populate the layout until I can get to the permanent wood kits. So far I have built 6 of the buildings. Then yesterday I put in two new turnouts in the mainline of the On30 to create another passing section where I had a bottle neck. Today I'll go back to the cut outs. I have a new wood kit for a freight caboose to build, but I'm putting that off for now. Lots to do..... B-)

Posted pic of hopper with one side weathered so far with pastels. Pic of a structer for cement plant before 'metal siding' is installed. I'll stick them in my trainspotting folder as I can't remember what other folders I have.

I have decided that the tree layout is too big and am going to tear it apart. I have plans for a smaller one, lighter materials too. I was going to try to sell it but there are so few model railroaders here that it would be a waste of time and money to advertise it. Therefore I may not have a tree layout this year, but just a loop of track on the floor. I'll keep all the buildings though. Time marches on...... B-)
