Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Progress report #2

For some reasonI just don't seem to have enough time to do much in the basement. It's cold down there too as all I have for heat is a little space heater that I put right behind my chair at the workbench. However, I have been slowly staining the strip wood to finish off the brewery. It is board on board construction and very time consuming. I get maybe one wall boarded up each day. There is a lot of "gingerbread" trim that I have to apply using scale 2xs and 4xs and 6xs. Lots of measuring and cutting. My type of fun, but not for everyone. I'll of course post pictures when the thing is finished. I also just bought a Bachmann refer car to match the brewery name and signage. You'll see...... B-)

,,,took everything off of the "test track" to clean up the dust rabbits. Yes, they were rabbits, bunnies that grew up! I even had one reallly long blonde hair wind itself around the wheels of 4 cars. What a wreck that would have been had I run them! Now its cleaner and running. Fun at last!

Wasn't layout progress, but I worked on some shipping containers. I was going to put my Deluxe Innov Twinstack set up for auction but figured for the trouble and expense of getting it few years ago I may as well run it as it is ifferent from the normal lowboy style container well cars. Secret to these ultra light car set is to put weight in bottom containers. I think I added too much weight but at least the trucks stay on the track and it rolls nicely. So spent some time over weekend adding weights to containers and painted a pair of undec containers. It's something RR as it has been a drought for rails in my basement.

Tinkered a bit on boxcars on sunday. Finished weathering a WP boxcar I painted/decaled. and decaled a blue boxcar for Grand Trunk and worked on some decals on some soon to be BN grain hoppers. I'll have to add "take photos' to my modelling to do list.

Fiddled some more with my F45 over the weekend, now has headlights and the rear of the body is finally at the right height, also put several magnetic switches in some of my cars and it is great to be able to turn the EOT on and off without lifting the car, now I need the ordered decals to show up, then more fiddling:^O ]:)

Got another GP20 stripped. and the big progress is that after 2 years my Armadillo Ale Brewing Co boxcars (times 3) are finally completed. Just need to find some brake wheels and slap the chassis/trucks on them. Good grief !!!!

In the midst of trying something I always wanted to do with one of my ConCor autoracks, cut the doors open. SHould one get the idea, save your money and buy a Red Caboose autorack with open doors. Not that the concor car isn't worth money but the work involved versus end product may not be worth the trouble. Maybe my thoughts will be more positive once complete. Things are going slow but mostly smooth. The worst part is shearing off the ladders and sanding the backside so the ladder will be see thru in between the rungs. Also the fact that the sides aren't see thru like Red Caboose.

Dave I have thought about doing the same thing then thought better of the whole idea, you would also have to put carrier decks in and as I just like to watch my trains run I really don't have a loading/unloading facility, I have also thought about the red caboose cars but so far haven't been able to find a Milwaukee Road car, keep looking I guess. ]:)

Middle deck was the easy part...piece of sheet plastic. The fun begins wit sanding the doors thin enuf so when they are in the open position, they will fit behind the ladders. Plus the roof corners need to be notched out for the doors to fit flush against car side. Those are the easy parts. Fun part is sanding the ladder thin. almost there. EVen after ordering a R/C autorack with open ends I still wanted to do this for the sake of trying it. I've never seen an article or published photos of one cut up. (still got 3 MTL Ortner hoppers cut up in my project bin) I like pushing the boundries. -- Edited by dl85vette at 09/25/2008 6:13 PM PDT
