Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Re: Progress report #2

tanks.  Now that winter has arrived, my photo outings will be a minimum.  Not much fun sitting in a truck with windows rolled up and engine running to keep warm.

I did not get as much as I should have last summer. Didn't do enough outings afterwork either.

Re: Progress report #2

Oh come on Dave. Why not go out and get some of those great snow plow shots that we see on You Tube. Just take along a nice hot toddy or two and those battery powered socks and gloves. You live in the Peg. You should be used to a few chilly days. Hee, Hee!!!!!! Smiley Very Happy

Re: Progress report #2

I'd love to get a shot as you described but no way of knowing when they set out or what branchline they are cleaning. Almost need connections with someone at railroad to tell ya when the plow is going out.  Railfanning isnt as fun when its -40.  Back in '08, I caught 2 BNSF units doing cold weather testing stopping in yard. I had to walk in snow half ways up to my knees to get a vantage point. -40 something that day. I remember becuase I thought I had to be nuts to be doing it.

I do have one shot that captures the essence of winter but it must be on another portable hard drive.

so much more relaxing when it is nice out , sit in truck with wondows down, some music, scanner on. etc etc...

Really need to win lottery so I can go to the Med for winter and railfan there.

Re: Progress report #2

Dave,

Nice pic's I am not so good at getting around on my own for taking photos.

I also added some work to my G gauge 1/29  scale modifications to a Bachmann Ten Wheeler, the green stuff is parts of the Bachmann orig, and white stuff needed tp be built or 3D printed or...

Re: Progress report #2

3D printed or what Charles? Do you have a 3D printer already?

Re: Progress report #2

Pete,

Alas I have no 3D printer...  I am considering building at least the walls of the cab with sheet styrene lamanated glued etc. and part 3D print.  Or then I could win the lottery (except I don't play, so I guess not) and have someone build it for me, or buy a 3D printer.

Home style 3D printers tend to be a bit coarse, but maybe in 1/29 it is not so bad.

All the best,

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

Pete,

It's weird, I looked, they don't seem to have that anymore, but they do have a $2000 laser cutter engraver.  Not buying that at the moment either...

All the best,

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

Progress on the diorama. Will post two sets of pictures. Needs more trees and shrubs and then the water. See the drunks and roofers? There is also a 'lil deuce coupe.

I realized that I needed more people so I raided most of my supply. The shots are too far away for you to see the animals I have around too. And how about that war memorial......

Re: Progress report #2

Hi-oh,

Got some progress, ordered an experimental part for my heavyduty flatcar design.  It is at Shapeways and being printed in stainless steel-ish, and is the bridge between a pair of trucks under the flatcar bed (need two with the four trucks).  It looks like this on Shapeways:

It does not need much detail, and metal would add weight to the car.

All the best,

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

Pete,

I was looking at your Christmas layout some more during a little break in activity (now that I got some things in the computer with a Windows 10 update fixed, discovered an interesting display color calibration tool, actually helped some, the photos and stuff seem to look better).  I really like the evergreen forest, I suppose you could use some taller trees too, but the effect is very pleasant.  The town lights at night are very nice.  The varied shape of the light and shadow is always intriguing, and makes you want to go and look.  I like the variety provided by the harbor scene add-on, and you have a great touch for adding detail.

Thanks for posting!

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

I poured the water in the harbor yesterday and now I am waiting for it to dry. Meanwhile I will try to fit the thing with legs so it matches up to the tree layout. The roads are supposed to line up if I measured it right. Then I have that new FSM kit to build which will be added next year. No time to build it this year, but I will be doing it in the dungeon for my winter project. Its a virgin forest so the trees are still young and not too tall yet. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Oh, I found a lit Christmas tree that I will be adding to the harbor scene. I also am adding a few fences here and there.
