Progress report #2

I locked the other thread. There is some good stuff in there that probably has been reposted in other threads. I'll check. In the meantime, here's another place to write. B-)

Re: Progress report #2

While watching college football and baseball playoffs, I have been busy on the harbor scene. Plastered and painted the edges and the base of the harbor. Put in the sea wall and pilings, scratch built a small fishing dock and have started on the boardwalk. Work, work work!!!

Re: Progress report #2

Finished the boardwalk. Put foundations on the buildings that abut it. Next will be blocking out the roads. Water will be the last thing to do. I need to put in some weeds rocks and rubble.

Re: Progress report #2

Nice work as always Pete. Is the harbour scene based on a real locale or just more amazing creativity from the brain?

Re: Progress report #2

Got plastered! Blocked out the roads with WS tape and used drywall compound for the roads.

Re: Progress report #2

Tape removed and buildings test fit in to slots. The road will be painted light brown with a covering of WS blended turf to look like a dirt road. The era is 1930's by the way, so no pavement just like the main tree layout. The harbor configuration is just out of my feeble brain and does not represent any place in real life as far as I know. I still have to put stuff into the water area like reeds, rocks and junk. In the background of one or two of the pics you can see the foundation of the 4th Street Bail Bond building that I am presently building.

Re: Progress report #2

Pete,

The WS tape seems to work nicely for that.  Never really thought about it much.  I can probably use that for the National Road going past Narrows Park.  It was packed crushed stone of some depth and tended to stand proud of the surrounding surfaces.  I guess I would very lightly sand the edges to round them out.

As I have been looking through eBay for Narrows Park photos (old postcards so far, some colorized even), I found more photos including the glassworks pedestrian bridge across the track on the east end of the Narrows at Cumberland, here are some extracts for educational purposes:

and:

So I have another side track I am continuing on for just a bit, a drawing of the pedestrian bridge, here is what it looks like so far:

The owner's house, employee's dormitory(?), and stone abutment from the far end of the bridge still exist.

All the best,

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

Boy you sure do know how to use that sketch-up. I'm assuming that is what you are still using.

The tape is fine but you really don't have to round out the shoulders. Once you add any ground cover the slight depth of about 1/8" will disappear.

I haven't touched the diorama in about a week. Other things come up you know. Maybe I'll get back to it this coming week after I get a few more things done around the house.

I have to undo some of the diorama to make room for the new Fine Scale Miniatures kit that I have coming. I decided not to use the hotel and will put it in the background of the On30 layout for forced perspective in a now bare corner up a hill. Should look good behind the trees.

The new fsm kit can be seen on page 27 of the December 2015 Model Railroader or at www.finescaleminiatures.com     It is "Westside Auto".

Re: Progress report #2

Pete,

Thanks, it drawings have become an integral part of documenting what conclusions  I develop in my research, and about the only way I feel I have a chance of building this stuff in some reasonable and manageable way.

That "Westside Auto" is some kit, and the forced perspective sounds cool (and space efficient).  Awaiting more photos!

Cool stuff,

Charles

Re: Progress report #2

Had my first operations session on the SVRR Wednesday. Had four operatoers and all went well. A good time was had by all. I am using a car card system from Micro-Mark and it is enough for my smallish switching layout. The guys appreciated the large size of the equipment in O scale as opposed to the HO we run and George's.

Now I have to get back to the tree addition or it will never be in any condition for this Christmas. The FSM kit will not be finished before that time though. I'll have to model an empty lot there.

Snow is on the ground here now. I guess it is really winter.

Bah, Humbug!

I was having my pics get chopped. Figured out my mistake. I was attaching as file instead of using the insert image option from tool bar when creating text..
