Modeling may be hazardous to your health!

Just received a new kit, Northeastern laser cut coal tower in N scale, which is made in California. This is a totally wooden kit. No metal parts at all. On the outside of the box is a sticker which says, "Warning: This product contains chemicals which are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm." OK, we have all seen that warning before. Especially on cigarette packs and most glues we use. But here is the kicker. Inside the box was a buff colored sheet with the following on it, "Warning: You can create dust when you cut, sand, drill or grind materials such as wood, paint, metal, plastic, concrete, cement or other masonry. In addition, other processes that alter the physical properties of a material, such as soldering, heating, spraying. etc. generate vapors or other types of chemical exposure. This dust or vapor often contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm." WOW! I think we all better quit right now! Maybe we should all invest in those glass cases with the two arm holes in them to build our models. You know. The kind used in medical research. I think I'll just keep wrapping myself in plastic wrap with a dust mask, eye goggles and ear plugs. It's cheaper. B-)

I'm surprised at you guys. From post #6 on this has been nothing but frivolous talk. And I started this thread with a very serious informational posting that should have awakened the safety gene in all our members. So what do you guys do? You turn this into another let's see who can be the super funny man here. Well, I am depressed. See if I give you any pertinent information about safety in our hobby any more. You should all hang your heads in shame; sluffing off my good intentions. I hope you all develop a rash in a place you can't scratch in public......]:) B-)

Hey we only picked on the lawyers. Not ever on the stupid rules and regulations of the EPA. And never really said anything about them even being lawyers at all. They are their own ruling party that does exactly what they want and you are powerless to do anything about it. This comes from FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE. They went after the company exec's where I worked, which caused a sale of the company and later the closing of the company. Lou

Well Pete, I try very diligently never to ingest OR inhale any of my model's parts. The California rulings, interesting though they may be, are alarmist "The Sky is Falling" rants of the worst kind. I'd LOVE to know just how MUCH material you would have to be exposed to. I mean, sodium saccharine ("Sweet and Low") DOES cause cancer in lab rats; in the equivalent human dose of approximately FIVE POUNDS PER DAY!!!!! Thank you, I'm SURE we all appreciate your thoughtful information! SO, What do you call a group of lawyers when............ :O ]:) ;) Mr. Breeze

I bumped this up because it is fitting with the thoughts in the other thread about what we did in our childhood. Maybe we can add stupid stunts we pulled here rather than add another thread. Yes I am running up the stairs with scissors in my hand and an xacto knife in the other...... SmileyCentral.com

My oldest Grandson got the real macoy steel slinky, not one of those plastic or even those puny little steel slinkys, and just had to have me watch it go down the basement stairs He thinking that I had not seen this before. I humored him for several minutes and he turned to me and proudly said "you know Grandpa I could watch this slinky all day!!" This when he got a number of electronic games including a gameboy advance sp and even a Robosapien robot that can obey comands and can utter some words even. Just goes to show simpler is better. Gene
