Bob, Thanks for the decal removal info. How do you feel about the Thomas Kincaide "the painter of light" Christmas series? http://www.collectiblestoday.com/ct/product/prdid-49039.jsp?_/_prod/_17/_/_18/_1031/_/_Y&endeca=true... While I don't own any of his train series we do own plates and other things Kincaid. Not reallly considered collectibles but stuff we reallly like of his work. Gene

My sister and her husband are both art professors-- my brother-in law-at a very prestigious University here in LA (Otis Art Institute) He was also one of the courtroom artists for the OJ trial (one from ABC, one from CNN, and him). Whenever I mention Kincaid to them they get apoplectic. Personally, I think his stuff is greeting card material, and he is not the artist anyway, as he only puts on one brush stroke on each painting (outsourced to India??) before signing them. He is an incredible marketer, however, and his galleries are successful all over the country. Since there are so many fine, creative artists in the US, I find it difficult to call his stuff art. However, it is very collectable; apparently a huge number of middle Americans really like his stuff. Actually, I like plates- my mom and dad bought a bunch, and some are really nice. I have a Yellow Brick Road one that I really like, and a couple of 3-D (I can't remember the artist, but they are the Barber of Seville and Aida) in our master bath. Remember we left coasters are a strange breed, and tend to shy away from the "norm" or mainstream of life. Bob

".... and he is not the artist anyway, as he only puts on one brush stroke on each painting (outsourced to India??) before signing them." Where did that bit of news come from? You mean he is just another successful rich fraud? "....apparently a huge number of middle Americans really like his stuff." Bob, what's wrong with that? We each have our own likes and dislikes. We have had this discussion many times here. That's why there are many brands of cars and art. Personal choice. No reason to look down your nose at "middle Americans" or anyone actually. Just because someone does not have your personal tastes does not make them "middle Americans" or lesser than you in any way. California. The breakfast food state. Take away the fruits and nuts and all you have left are the flakes. :D We have all heard that old joke...right? ;) OK. I'm ready for the Newfy jokes now. I've heard them all.....but you can try. Pete Heres one from one of the Back country Newfies, A NEWFIES LETTER TO THE MINISTER OF HEALTH AND WELFARE CANADA AFTER RECEIVING THE AIDS LEAFLET DEAR SIR; I HAVE JUST RECEIVED MY AIDS LEAFLET IN MY MAIL AND WOULD LIKE TO APPLY STRAIGHT AWAY FOR AIDS. I HAVE BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS AND LIVING ON WELFARE AND ANY OTHER AIDS I CAN GET. IT NOW SEEMS I WILL BE GETTING AIDS FROM THE GOVERNMENT FOR HAVING SEX. IT IS A PITY THESE AIDS CAME SO LATE AS I ALREADY HAVE 15 CHILDREN. I WAS WONDERING THOUGH IF YOU WOULD BE MAKING BACK PAYMENTS. THE LEAFLET STATES THAT THE MORE SEX I HAVE, THE MORE CHANCE I HAVE OF GETTING AIDS. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS PERSUADING MY WIFE WHO IS NOT SO KEEN AFTER 15 KIDS. SEVERAL YEARS AGO I BROUGHT HOME SOME SEXUAL AIDS AND SHE SHOWED LITTLE INTEREST AND THEY WERE HARDLY USED. WOULD THERE BE A CHANCE OF A REFUND FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT FOR THE $15.83 I PAID FOR THESE GADGETS? ANYWAY, I WILL EXPLAIN TO HER THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL NOW BE GIVING US AIDS FOR ALL THE SEX WE HAVE AND I AM SURE SHE WILL AGREE THAT WE CAN’T LET A CHANCE LIKE THIS SLIP BY. YOU ALSO STATE THAT I CAN PASS MY AIDS ON, BUT AS YOU WILL UNDERSTAND, WITH A WIFE AND 15 CHILDREN THERE WON’T BE MUCH LEFT TO PASS ON. IF BY ANY CHANCE THERE IS A BIT LEFT THOUGH, I WILL PASS THE AIDS ON TO MY POOR OLD MOTHER-IN-LAW WHO ONLY HAS A SMALL PENSION. I UNDERSTAND FROM YOUR LEAFLET THAT I CAN GET AIDS THROUGH HAVING A BLOOD TRANSFUSSION AND I INTEND TO WRITE TO MY LOCAL HOSPITAL STRAIGHT AWAY TO SEE WHEN I CAN HAVE ONE. WILL THE AIDS I GET FROM THE HOSPITAL BE IN ADDITION TO THE AIDS I GET FROM THE GOVERNMENT? PERHAPS YOU WILL WRITE ME AND LET ME KNOW. I AM A FIRM BELIEVER IN THE GOVERNMENT PASSING ON ANY AIDS IT CAN TO THOSE THAT SHOULD HAVE IT. I AM SURE THAT YOU WILL AGREE THAT, BY MY PAST PERFORMANCE THAT, I DO QUALIFY FOR THIS. COULD YOU LET ME KNOW HOW MUCH I WILL RECEIVE AND WILL I GET IT WEEKLY OR MONTHLY? YOURS FAITHFULLY SHAMUS O’TOOLE Jack

Jack, If the Govt. is going to give out aids, will they still be wanting the "Clawback"? In other words, will they want aids too? They screw us enough.....]:) B-) & :x

I simply answered the question that was posed to me. A simple search of Thomas Kincaide on Yahoo or Google reveals this and much more about the artist. Also, I saw a documentary on him on 20/20 some years ago. It is no secret about the one brush stroke. That is a well-documented fact in the art world. I have no problem. It seems a lot like a lithograph in a way. If people like his stuff, fine. People also like Jackson Pollack, who I feel is the greatest art fraud of the 20th century. Just my opinion. I like Impressionist/modern stuff, like Monet, Van Gogh, some Picasso, Manet, and have a real fondness for early Southern California Impressionist landscapes. Some people find that boring. I love black and white photography. However, I have friends who like traditional landscapes like Yosemite, or still lifes (Flowers in particular) and even one whose fascination is Elvis on black velvet (Raider fan!), Everyone has their own taste. I was not looking down my nose at Middle America. I was simply pointing out that is the target audience for his corporation. I certainly feel no superiority-- this group and others have demonstrated a remarkable variety of opinions and beliefs, and each one of them equally valid. My disapproval or disagreement does not necessarily reflect any disparagement. I think you all know that I am pretty opinionated, but I've always felt that you shouldn't dish it out if you are not prepared to take it. I certainly don't aim to offend people, particularly the people in this group whom I consider friends, at the very least through our common love of model railroading. However, I was born with an obnoxious bone in my body, and sometimes it does get the better of me. Throw it back at me and see if it sticks!! I cannot begin to thank everyone who has contributed to the greater knowledge of this hobby in general and mine in particular. One thing I have truly enjoyed about this forum is its diversity, and the willingness of the membership to throw the occasional off-the-wall thread, and see where it goes from there. It is fascinating, keeps me coming back every day at least to read, perhaps laugh, perhaps choke, or perhaps just go hmmmm. Lots of great stuff here. It's only when I write I get in trouble... Peace out everyone. From your friend, Bob

Ease off Bob. You really didn't have to "apologize" for anything. There are some of us who just love to "stir the pot", right Gene and Lou, and some who like to play "Devil's Advocate" (Who...me?) and spark a little discussion. There is that old saying about "heat" and "kitchen"......]:) I used to think that all collectors were nuts....and now I are one! Yipes!!!! Anxiously awaiting my first Provincial car. B-) & :x
