Most every structure on my layout has been made with plastic of some sort.(except for a scratch built wooden fire tower) I now have won a lazer cut kit and was wondering if it will go together like the plastic buildings or what problems will I run into trying to build this wood kit. I take it that lazer cut kits are wood? Thanks for any suggestions. Gene

Here's a hint for your roofs Chuck. Get yourself some "play sand" from Home Depot or fine sand from the hobby shop. Next time you paint your roof, no matter what color, sprinkle a little sand on the wet paint. It will look more like a tarred roof and give a little texture to the finish. Try it on any flat surface to see if you like the results before you do a roof though. You may not like the effect or you may love it. B-)

Or try a piece of 220 grit sandpaper. Punk

I have found that Home Depot has a series of different coloured paint chips which have grit embedded in them. The price is right (Free), the selection is great and they make great roofs for smaller buildings. BUd.

I grabbed some of those little composite countertop samples to cut down to size for business signs or somehting. I'll figure something out. dave I like the sandpaper idea Doug.

Be sure to use and old pair of scissors to cut the sandpaper. It will definitely dull the blades quickly. I have one pair just for such dirty work. And different colors make for roof color variations. Not all roofs are black. Browns and greys are good too. Just be sure to use a fine grade to match your scale. 220 looks good in N; 100 for HO; 60 for O. But trust your own eye for the look you want. White or yellow glue for a wood or cardboard roof backing and contact cement for a styrene back. B-)

Gene, The barn kit came today. I weathered it and then decided it would look better if it were a faded barn red. So....see the pictures in Kim's album. It is a very pale wash of barn red over the weathering. Just the main exterior walls are red. The rest are all weathered to a grey tone. Hope the colors come through all right. As a bonus, I thought you might like a very rusted corrugated tin roof instead of the tar-paper looking one that came in the kit. You tell me. There is a picture of the roof pieces also. Need some feedback from you Gene, before I go further. The Gravely is on hold for a bit guys while I build this for Gene. B-)

Pete, I like the corrugated roof idea but I am a little concerened of the darkness of the barn. It might hide some of the oldish features. If you look at the original color it looks more brownish.Possibly lightening the red would bring out the board features. I'll go with your best idea though. I was wondering one other thing. That open window in the peak ,where the loft would be on the front, just begs for a short beam with a pulley and rope. Is that a possibility? Otherwise the other colors look perfect. Hope this helps.
