Don't you know the law of physics, the more horses the less work to achieve and maintain the speed, a smaller engine works twice as hard to do the same job, I proved my theory years ago, I bought a six cylinder Holden ute, it was fitted with a 173cubic inch six with a three speed column change and 3.55:1 diff and single barrel carb, first trip was 500 klms and cost me 120 litres of fuel, with a max of 80Kph, next trip was the same distance but with a four speed and a 3.36:1 diff at 100 Kph was 75 litres of fuel, next trip, again 500 klms I had put in a worked 186 (stroked to 216) with a 500 Holley, 500 Ks for 40 litres of fuel at 120Kph, so I proved to everyone I knew at the time, more horses less work simple.

When I did some mods to my vette, mileage got much better. Used to average 18.5-20.5 mpg and after increasing the ponies I averaged 25 going to PEI (with AC on for periods) I came from the school of anything over 20 is gravy. My father had a 76 Ford p/u that got 7 mpg. (brutal)
