Re: Irritations #2

2 Home Depots here don't have the floor tiles I need to finish my train room. Started to go to the McPhilips location only to spend 30 minutes in supper traffic and get half there, so I got fed up and came back, Superstore under renos, ended up grabbing couple pizzas elsewhere. 90 minutes and I got pizzas from a place several minutes away. AND NO TILE!!! guess the brighter side is 20 days left. Pretty much this week left as far as being at 'work' as the next couple weeks I will be busy will appts and clearing out.

Re: Irritations #2

Dave, I remember many, many moons ago when I checked out of the Army, what a hassle it was to get all the signatures needed to clear out of so many department that I never even heard of before. It got so that I just signed off some of the stuff myself!!!!! The only really important document I needed was my DD214, Record of Service, that gives me my rights to all the govt. stuff us vets are supposed to get. The other document needed was my Honorable Discharge. I'll bet you can't wait to be a civilian again......;-)

Re: Irritations #2

It doesn't matter either way Pete. It isn't bad being military but I guess those days that you get voluntold to do something makes you appreciate being a civy and getting paid overtime. Plus some days it is just stupid at work with the mentality and some of the newer breed. I look forward to change though. I just want my lucky day to come to get into the RR workforce. good pay, extra cash for overtime, benefits and another pension to pay into. It's getting silly at work with so many people posted or retiring or medically released so what I see left makes me glad to be leaving it. more like laughing when I leave it.

Re: Irritations #2

Hi all, so sorry for not being active but I have been going threw a lot of medical test. In the next week or so I will be going into the hospital for a spinal fusion. L3/L4. Have not been able to do much work on my layout because of my back problems. So if you don't see me for awhile you now know why. Will let you know when I go in. Chuck

Re: Irritations #2

I know the lower back damage problem, when I broke my back I destroyed four vertibrae and crushed three discs, I never had an operation because I was working for myself so no workers insurance and I couldn't afford $70,000 + in the early 80s, still can't so I just live with it, I hope you fare well and hurry back to feeling good. ]:)

Re: Irritations #2

We are having some house work done....replacing the gutters and soffits on the roof because they have been leaking. Imagine my surprise when at one point on hte garage the workmen discovered a very large nest of carpenter ants, aka black termites. They had destroyed about ten feet of facsia board under the vinyl trim. I had to call an exterminator ASAP who came and sprayed the whole house. Hopefully he got them all. Now I'm $450 poorer, not planned on of course, and watching for more of those little buggers. This house is a money pit! X-( Aren't they all, just when you think it's all done someone always finds something else to do. ]:) They just opened up the last side of the house. More money to be spent as the fascia is rotten under the vinyl again. ARRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! :_| -- Edited by barrysfp45 at 07/03/2009 3:38 AM PDT -- Edited by ginzokid at 07/03/2009 3:48 AM PDT

Re: Irritations #2

Oops, the vinyl did not rot, just the wood under it! I guess the 2nd law of thermodynamics really gets to us. Everything is trying to return to the lowest level of energy and most disarray! Charles

Re: Irritations #2

If the law is anything like they are here,if it's a long weekend or holiday weekend they are out in force, you take your time on those particular times, your fine is less than ours,20k over is $500 I think from memory and three points of the license, double demerits during holiday time too,do you lose points too or just the fine? ]:)

Re: Irritations #2

Serves you right Dave! You are burning more gas at the higher speed too! Never had a ticket yet and don't plan on it! (They never caught me in the Vette......;-) )

Re: Irritations #2

Are there any roads where you can actually speed (safely) in NFLD Pete? I was driving the truck. I don't care about the difference in gas economy at those speeds. #1 city driving for gas is terrible anyways. #2 only time the gas comes into play is when I hit N.D and the speed limit is 75 mph. That speed brings my engine just over 2000-2200 rpm range and the truck gets thisty then. Truck gets its best mileage if I set the cruise for whatever speed that keeps it around 2000 rpm. However for the hour of driving from border to Grand Forks, it doesn't make a huge difference if I drive at 75. If I was really after fuel economy I wouldn't own a vette or a truck. I have a hard shell (fiberglass) bed cover for the truck and that really improved my mileage out on the hiways. It extended my range from a tank of fuel an extra 100 km. So to drive a few days on a road trip makes a big difference in gas savings. A free tank to every 500km I drive.

Re: Irritations #2

Our roads are pitifully neglected and rough or rutted from all the heavy semis. Therefore, it really isn't safe to speed anywhere. That said, the road I travel every day to take Kim to work has an average speed of 140KPH although the posted is 100 max. It's also the route of the bumper cars or NASCAR drafters. I go 100 and feel like I'm going backwards getting 25MPG. If I do 110, I only get 20 MPG. However if I do 110 for a long haul like going up to the bro-in-laws around the bay, I get cloer to 30 MPG. Go figure. Come to think of it, these are about the same figures my '86 Vette got. How come the improved economy of a 4cylinder gets the same mileage as an 8cylinder high performance engine? ?:| So, to answer your question; no. B-)

Re: Irritations #2

Don't you know the law of physics, the more horses the less work to achieve and maintain the speed, a smaller engine works twice as hard to do the same job, I proved my theory years ago, I bought a six cylinder Holden ute, it was fitted with a 173cubic inch six with a three speed column change and 3.55:1 diff and single barrel carb, first trip was 500 klms and cost me 120 litres of fuel, with a max of 80Kph, next trip was the same distance but with a four speed and a 3.36:1 diff at 100 Kph was 75 litres of fuel, next trip, again 500 klms I had put in a worked 186 (stroked to 216) with a 500 Holley, 500 Ks for 40 litres of fuel at 120Kph, so I proved to everyone I knew at the time, more horses less work simple. ]:) When I did some mods to my vette, mileage got much better. Used to average 18.5-20.5 mpg and after increasing the ponies I averaged 25 going to PEI (with AC on for periods) I came from the school of anything over 20 is gravy. My father had a 76 Ford p/u that got 7 mpg. (brutal) -- Edited by dl85vette at 07/06/2009 7:34 AM PDT

Re: Irritations #2

Let me see. 1986 Vette with 5.7L (350CI) block, fuel injected, tweaked computer chip to 300HP = 30MPG. 2007 Optra with 2.2L block, fuel injected, stock 136HP = 30MPG. Makes sense to me. B-)

Let me see if I understand... 4 horses eat X 8 horses eat 2 times X 4 horses produce y 8 horses produce 2 times y? Now invent two horses with four legs each and stand back!!! Would that be a hybrid? Gene
