West Wall (south of Aachen, on the Belgium border)

The West Wall is often mentioned in history books but rarely illustrated. These photos were taken on 11 June 2005 about 10 miles south of Aachen, Germany along the Belgium border. This section runs the entire length of the Belgium-German border but much of it has been covered over in farmer's fields or destroyed during construction projects. The theory and tactics of the contruction of the West Wall are clearly understood once it it actually viewed. Dragon's Teeth are placed only in areas that could support vehicle movements (tanks, artillery, armoured personnel carriers, etc,). Bunkers are mostly destroyed now, but the Dragon's Teeth remain due to their construction. It's interesting to note that the Allies mainly went around the West Wall in 1944-45 and few battles were fought in the area.
