Well, all of this sounds pretty familiar: yes, the Schiffer publications are excellent, but indeed expensive. I must say that one of their more recent publications, the three-volume "uniforms of the waffen SS" by Michael D. Beaver is awesome. But then again, the same goes for the Fedorowitz works, the Ryton works-all excellent but very expensive. I have no idea if any of you have ever heard of the french "histoire et collections" publications- they are of "Schiffer" quality ( both in lay-out as information)but all at very nice prices.
Judging by the pages that have come loose over the years, my most used books would be the B. L. Davis ones mentioned by "deradler": these were true "bibles" when I started out 25 years ago.
