Most used research material-Book, website etc

For me my most used research book is Brian L Davis' German Army Uniforms 1933-1945 and the 2 part German Luftwaffe Uniforms 1933-1940, and 1941-1945.

I agree that From Doughboy to GI has some of the best close-up photos of US uniforms, and unusual field equipment. Excellent choice.

Indeed! Also, The American WW2 GI in Photographs (published by Windrow and Greene) also shows excellent photos of period uniforms and equipment. There is a new addition to the compendium of WW2 material which is the book by Enjames......it has garnered high acclaim from collectors. This should be my next target. A sneak preview of its pages has really enticed me and is going to prove to be a visual gastronomical delight! Regards Deradler! Richard

A good reference book is well worth the money it will save you down the road. One bogus Anti-partisan badge could buy several of the fine Schiffer Publication books. I use "Doughboy to GI" by Kenneth Lewis often, highly recommend William K. Emerson's "Encyclopedia of United States Army Insignia and Uniforms," and have built a great patch collection based on Richard W. Smith's "Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the U.S. Armed Forces 1941-1945." For German items: many of the Bender Publications are good, the new Schiffer color photo books are excellent, Wade Krawczyk works on German Army Uniforms, and Michael Tucker's book "German Combat Badges of the Third Reich" is helpful. I have also cut out articles from various English and foreign magazines to make my own references. Wartime photo books give good detail of items in use. I stopped counting my books on WW II at 750, but they have become a valuable collection in themselves.

Not much I can add. I found a wonderful garage sale book "German Army & Navy Uniforms and Insignia 1871-1918" by Hoffschmidt & Tantum. It is part of a series published by "WE. Inc" of Old Greenwich Connecticut and published in 1968. 195 absolutely packed pages. They had a list of about 12 volumes at that time. Then course there is ASMIC and it's list of publications.

Most of the Schiffer Publications books are really good reference dealing with German uniforms and medals, the only problem is that they deal with very specific groups and are fairly expensive.

pcconrad02- I agree that the Army Air forces web site is an outstanding research and forum site for anyone interested in WWII US Army air force. I will have to check out some of the other ones you have listed and save them as favorites.

On-line, I use http://www.medal.net/ quite a bit. It'll do an excellent job of pointing you in a direction or providing additional resources you didn't know about. In spite of it's name, it pretty much covers most areas of militaria. Aside from that, I use highly specialized books on each topic (for instance I have books on the British Crimea Medal). I've visited most of the sources listed above and they're all fairly good - it really depends on your area of interest.

Well, all of this sounds pretty familiar: yes, the Schiffer publications are excellent, but indeed expensive. I must say that one of their more recent publications, the three-volume "uniforms of the waffen SS" by Michael D. Beaver is awesome. But then again, the same goes for the Fedorowitz works, the Ryton works-all excellent but very expensive. I have no idea if any of you have ever heard of the french "histoire et collections" publications- they are of "Schiffer" quality ( both in lay-out as information)but all at very nice prices. Judging by the pages that have come loose over the years, my most used books would be the B. L. Davis ones mentioned by "deradler": these were true "bibles" when I started out 25 years ago.
