To invoice or not

I understand that ebay automatically invoices the customer when a sale is confirmed that is not buy it now.

Is this always the case? If so, should I also send an invoice with personal language, or is this too much and/or too confusing for the buyer?

If it's a situation where they don't have to pay right away, like an auction, I believe you have to manually send the invoice. With Buy it now, it all happens automatically because they pay before you even get the order.
