I am uncomfortable with the scheme ebay uses when a buyer picks up merchandise from the seller. I am new as an ebay seller and have just sold a pair of speakers for $650. As I understand it, the buyer will be furnished a six digit code to give to the seller. The seller then gives the code to ebay, who releases the payment they are holding. This scheme is ripe for fraud in my opinion and does not protect the seller.
Let's say the buyer wants to defraud the buyer. He sends a schill to pickup the merchandise, who makes up a six digit code to give to the seller. He then collects the merchandise and drives off. The seller then reports the phony code to ebay who then informs the seller that the code is no good. The buyer after being informed that the merchandise has been picked up and no longer available, asks for his money back.
I don't know how long ebay takes to check the code provided by the buyer but unless it is instant, the seller has his butt hanging out.
I am going to inform the buyer that in order for him to pick up the merchandise, he will need to allow me to photograph, him, his ID and his vehicle including license tag.
If I have gotten anything wrong, please advise.

Ive had several pricey, pick up only items sold, with never a problem. The approval of the scan code is instant,I cant imagine a 'phony' code being approved.I wouldnt make a pick up item transaction so complicated,it usually goes very smoothly.

Go here and read about providing proof of purchase. I always check their driver's license to make sure it's the buyer.

Buyers receive a QR code which can be scanned as well as the 6 digit code in an email. They bring that with them as proof of who they are, though with higher priced items I would also want to see their D.L. and take down the plate number on the car. Entering the code or scanning the QR code gets a quick response from ebay.
I have been listing items with the local pickup option since before ebay came up with the idea of using codes. Some of the items I sold that way were quite pricey, and I never had an issue. However, I do transact my business outside my local P.D. or at a branch of my Bank's parking lot so things are caught on camera.
