Mailing a 6' x 4' poster???

My huband has a very large collectible farm equipment poster that is 6' x 4' in size.    Any suggestions on how to mail.    I am assuming I will have to find some kind of tubing but how do I enter the correct dimensions.      I plan on looking for something a little over 4' in length and big enough around to accomodate a mailing label.     Has anyone mailed anything this large of a poster before????

Re: Mailing a 6' x 4' poster???

The USPS tubes are about 38" long. I mailed a fishing rod once, and they taped two tubes together to accommodate it. It's easier to ask them first and maybe the other shipping services as well. Prices go up when you're off their measurement charts.

If you can't use a USPS Priority Mail tube, get something from Uline, which has every size and sort you can imagine.

Go to your local home improvement store and in the concrete materials (ask at desk) section you will find concrete pour tubes made of a dense cardboard. They come in different diameters and lengths.

Thanks so much.    My husband suggested PVC pipe but will check these out as well.

Re: Mailing a 6' x 4' poster???

I usually use them for shipping art and they are great for not having to roll them up so tight as to cause damage. A loose roll seems to work best and, you need to keep in mind the person on the other end damaging the item if it is too tight in that pvc pipe. Rolling the poster in paper and putting two pull tabs can help retrieval. I've never used pvc pipe.

Re: Mailing a 6' x 4' poster???

I shipped some long wood bar clamps,  Use the cardboard roll that carpet comes on (approximately 5" diameter) .  Used skil saw to cut to desired length.  Used a can to fit in both ends One will fit exactly)  with four screws to hold can in (mine was heavy object 14 lbs.)

Yep, same idea but I'll bet yours is cheaper. I used to stockpile boxes, tubes, etc. Now I just buy "on-demand" and can actually walk thru the workshop now.

Another thought on shipping, I would never use USPS on a 4 foot long package. UPS or even FedX seem to be more affordable.

If you go the carpet roll route, be sure to take some type of saw with you.  A box blade will not cut it and it will be 12 ' long.

When you go to enter the dimensions into the rate calculator, remember the figure fused for both width and height is the diameter of the tube. Just measure straight across the open end at its widest point. The length is always whatever the longest side is.

If you use USPS shipping calculator, use package greater than 12",  Then select Non Rectangular button.  It will walk you thru it.
