At 105" x 55", this is the largest repro tapestry I can find. My question is: is the one in the ebay sale the same as mine? Different maker? There is a small description in a frame and another lable that was loose from the back just tucked inside. It has a date of 1972 on it. The lable stuck on mine has a date of 1982? This is printed on linen with a burlap backing. Never used. Any thoughts?

The makers appear to be different. The one in the eBay listing is by the Craye Group:

whereas yours is by Editions d'Art de Rambouillet:

(the video in that link is very informative).

So the Cray are machine woven copies and the Ramboullet are printed on linen canvas? Is one better than the other? Hard to get a fix on these with all the sales pitch talk in there.

Probably the only way to decide is to visit the Musee de Cluny to view the original and then look at the copies. I suspect a woven copy would be better as it is imitating the original materials, structure and textures but the colour matching of the threads would have to be very good and that is a costly and time taking skill. Both copies rely on fooling the eye with beautiful illusions but as with a print of the Mona Lisa we know they can't be the real thing. Both are somewhat expensive items of home decor but as they are copies can be displayed without worrying too much about light fading whereas the original is in the highest category of rare art, a miraculous survival.
Search French sites for reproductions and see what they are asking now. I think there will always be a demand for such pretty wall hangings.
