In the news........the USS Grayback (SS-208) has been located near Okinawa. She has been on Eternal Patrol since 30 March, 1944. She was awarded 2 Navy Unit Commendations and 8 battle stars for her service in wwii.
Here's the news clip: https://us.cnn.com/2019/11/11/us/uss-grayback-wwii-submarine-discovery-trnd/index.html
I also collect naval covers of wwii submarines. This is the one I have of the Grayback in my collection postmarked June 30, 1941, first day of postal service:

That is a super neat bit of military history!
Speaking of philatelists and numismatists together, Heron's first visit to a genuine
real coin shop was in 1960. Actually it was a stamp & coin shop combined. The father
was the stamp dealer. The son was the coin & paper money dealer. Although the son
really was luke-warm about paper money. The son was also luke warm about stamps
but the two of them together were able to pay rent on a very nice shop. The son was
also a dealer of world coins. The son also taught Heron about coin 'grading'.
The son was a Lt. in the Naval Reserves and had been on active duty during the last year of WWII,
and also re-called during the Korean war. It was during his travels in various parts of
the world that the coin dealer became interested in 'world coins'.
Memories from years long gone! (And yes, Heron has some stamps. Mostly revenue
and air mails and special deliveries, and misc. back of book (bob) stamps, including
some parcel post and magazine and newspaper stamps. Almost all 'foreign' stamps.
About 80% from Central and South America. Fun stuff from long ago)
