Did you mean:

lesson learned: Ask for return address and conditions before buying an item.

Maybe this is all known. I just experienced this and would like to share it.
Turns out a seller can advertise an item as located in US, when in fact, it maybe coming from overseas, or needs to be shipped overseas for a return.
I bought an item that was advertised as located in same state as me, with a free shipping and buyer pays the return shipment. There was no obvious indication of actual item location and return location.
Only that when I wanted to return the item then i was given an address in China with lengthy instructions on customs etc. At a high level calculation, this showed me it is going to actually cost me more than what I paid to return this (I paid about $20).
For me $20 is too small to go through the hassle. So I am about to give up returning the item.
My advice to anyone reading this, ask the seller to disclose item origin and return locations with all their rules. Especially when item is advertised as "buyer pays return shipping".

This is the item location policy.

The location of the item (where shipped from) is supposed to be accurate:
