There are a lot of fake usb drives out there -- drives that may appear to have the correct capacity when plugged in, but that fail when trying to actually read or write large amounts of data. Apparently it is not difficult to alter a drive so that it appears to have more usable capacity than it actually does.
Your best bet is to read some reviews of particular models and buy a name brand drive from a reputable source that has been in business selling such devices for a long time.
If you do buy a drive, be sure to test it using actual files as soon as possible before you use it for important data. The worst case would be to buy a drive and use it to back up important files, and then find out later when you need the files that they are not readable.

Don't buy low priced drives from chinese sellers.

Stick to reputable brands. Buy from a US seller. Avoid stock photos, etc.
Good luck!

Don't buy low priced drives from chinese sellers.
Or from new sellers from any location that may be drop-shipping items from those sellers in China, or who may be using such sellers as their suppliers even if they ship from elsewhere.

Amazon is where you go to read reviews. 10 to 1 someone there is selling the same drive you'd find here, if it's a brand name. Of course if your looking a Chinese sellers, think counterfeit unless they look to be a reputable seller with lots of good feedback for that item.

"how to check if a product about to purchase is authentic"
Buy B&M (in person), that's the only way.
