The item I bought was stated to be shipped by the seller using USPS Ground Advantage.
Apparently, FedEx SmartPost was cheaper and they are using that instead.

Yes and No.
Yes, because you paid for a level of service that was agreed on when you made that purchase. Maybe you have better service from one courier and have had issues with the other.
And no if the item arrives on time with no issues. To me, as long as i get it within a reasonable time that was estimated (on listing), i would have no problem.
It is not smart for sellers to change shipping terms after the sale without consulting with the buyers. IMHO

Depends on your need. FedEx post and the now discontinued UPS post (last week) have always been at least 36 to 48 hours slower than USPS alone, sometimes as much as three calendar days slower. Actually any of the three by themselves are usually faster than either combo has ever been.

does it matter?
At its face, you have a NAD claim. But if you wind up happy, it's a non-issue, right? 🤔

I am not sure what is going on with this seller.
I paid Monday evening 8:37pm ET. Last night Thursday at 11:58pm ET I get an email that the item was "shipping" i.e. a shipping label was created.
I was fully expecting USPS Ground Advantage.
eBay has an estimate that I should receive the item between today Jan 17 --- not happening --- and Friday Jan 24. This is going to be real interesting since Monday is a federal holiday.

Thanks. Wow. I didn't realize that UPS SurePost is no more.

My biggest concern is if the item is damaged in transit.
There is a history of neither carrier involved in these hybrid services accepting responsibility for the insurance claim, and the seller becoming non-responsive, forcing the buyer to file an Ebay MBG claim.
I prefer less aggravation.
I also object to the rotten handling FEDEX ground provides. I will not order most items from sellers who use FEDEX Ground.

UPS SurePost is not discontinued @transamcc and I don't now of any changes that occurred last week.
As of Jan 1st the contract between UPS and USPS ended and UPS is handling SurePost end-to-end instead of passing off to USPS for final delivery. The service still very much exists, but it changed Jan 1st. Certain addresses are no longer included now that USPS is out of the picture, including PO Boxes, military addresses, territories.

Yes. UPS doing all of their own delivery currently That contract expired at the end of 2024. That means UPS is delivering all of its own packages. The USPS, UPS delivery contract is over.

I will not be happy if I don't get it by Friday Jan 24.
And the handoff of FedEx to USPS is not the smoothest from my experience.
Early on in this hybrid relationship, a 20" TV from Circuit City "disappeared" in the hand off between UPS / FedEx and USPS. I guess this seller is trying to squeeze the last $1.

As I replied to the OP. USPS is not involved and UPS doing it end to end and only in contiguous 48. That has eliminated the average 3 day delay for the handling between the partners on origin and delivery ends.
Cut and pasted my reply to the OP here :

I agree with you about less aggravation.
By rotten handling do you mean damaged boxes?

I feel you. I only offered my ^^^ thoughts in the hopes of saving you any worries until you get to that bridge. Life's too short. Let's try it this way: Best case scenario, they arrive safely/timely and you're happy. Worst case, you use the buyer's MBG.
Personally, I avoid sellers who don't use USPS... don't know why, I just do. Were I in your shoes, I'd not lose the next few days. I'd rest easy knowing that I'd be left whole, even if only eventually. But dang that shopping for the item again... 😑

I am not worried. I know eBay will make me "whole". I am annoyed to be honest. I was hoping to get the item sooner than later which is what it is looking like.

I don't think it matters. If it arrived safely, what difference does it make?
