What is going on with search? It is including excluded items, excluding desired ones

I've been searching and mostly buying on ebay for >20 years and recently the search function even the Advanced version has gone off the rails.

If I search (ignore quotation marks they're not in the search) " brandname style size  " and I get not only the brandname items, but things similar.  Also every model of brandname not just the style I input, and sizes all over the place.

If I try to exclude things (because using the general search came up with 3,000 results) using the minus sign to exclude some styles, it comes up with no results. Same thing if I put the term in exclude section in Advanced search.

The past week or so it has become a total waste of time to try to find something on ebay.

It is totally messed up. In most searches that I do there are so many sponsored and promoted items, no matter how I sort, that I usually give up. You never know if you are seeing everything or not. But that's just another way eBay "thinks" that they are making money when in reality their probably driving buyers off the site.

In some cases, a general search may pull in items that are listed in the wrong category, or items that include inappropriate keywords. Sometimes sellers purposefully list their items incorrectly to wind up in more searches, or else just make mistakes. In some cases, eBay may be doing some sort of keyword substitution or keyword-to-category mapping where it is not appropriate.

Putting one keyword in quotes or using an exclusion term should avoid the search term substitutions and automatic category navigation, in most cases.

Try starting with a general search of your brand item, and then narrow to a particular category if the search does not do that already. You may find category-specific filters that allow you to narrow your search and eliminate many items that are in the wrong category. Filters for size and type can be helpful -- these often work much better than trying to use a keyword that may be misinterpreted or may be present in another item-specific field. If there are listings that have multiple variations, as long as one variation matches your search the listing will appear in your results.

If you could provide an actual example that illustrates the sort of problem you are encountering, I might be able to give more practical suggestions rather than just general hints.

They want you to buy what THEY want you to buy.  Same with Amazon.

Thought my PC was infected by some kind of key-stroke manipulation virus or something.   Now I have to use notepad to type in the search string I want and paste it into the search bar.

PS- As a software guy I have to ask who in their right mind would think this is an improvement?  And who would approve of this change?
