Sellers selling fake items in jewelry

I have been buying on here for over 20 years and all of a sudden there are way too many sellers listing fake gold items, fake diamonds and fake jewelry from China.  Maybe we should demand all items sold be authenticated by E bay.  I am so sick of having to waste my time and hold up my  refunds because of this, who agrees with me????

The size of the site makes policing a function of automated procedures which run on a schedule or the results of MBG claims.

Reports by buyers who have not purchased the item or other sellers are fruitless, expensive and generally discouraged or ignored.

Ebay has required authentication when they have viewed it as essential to continue selling certain types of products.

Fake jewelry is not limited to items from China, NY, LA and other major cities have sellers offering their share.

@mollyb8922,

Do you check the feedback profile of each seller you intend to buy from before making purchases or do you just go by their feedback percentage?  If you do look at their profile page do you click on the numbers of neutral and negative received to read only those comments?   Do you read everything in the listings to see if the syntax of some of the info is off like it was written by someone whose first language isn't english?

I clicked on the feedback profiles of several sellers you have bought from, and wouldn't go near some of them. I opened a few listings from some that had the hall marks of china based sellers mentioning gold kts, 925 silver, but no photos of the stamps, and other incomplete info.

Since ebay can't possibly vet each and every single one of the listings posted on the site, you have to do your due diligence to prevent being taken. If you do run into an issue file the appropriate MBG dispute.

I saw something on YouTube yesterday about many of these fake Chinese-made items having extremely high and toxic levels of lead and other heavy metals.

And how exactly is that going to work? Just in the Fashion Jewelry subcategory there are more than 7 million listings. And that's just one of 15 subcategories in Jewelry & Watches. Prices in those categories range from 1 cent to tens of thousands of dollars.

So are you proposing that eBay expand the current voluntary authentication service, remove the $500 minimum, and force every single piece of jewelry to be sent to GIA? Can you imagine the backlog? Can you imagine a GIA certified authenticator having to issue a certificate stating "I certify this is a Butterfly Collarbone Chain Friendship Card Good friend Magnet Set Necklace Hot and is worth the penny you paid for it"?

Just read sellers feedback and check seller ID where buyer lives.
