Seller trying to scam me

I purchased a laptop from this seller for close to 1000 dollars. He has very good feedback 1000+. I received it yesterday, but the specs of the laptop don't match the description. The one I got is a much cheaper version. I contacted the seller and he claims that he sent me the correct item and I'm the one who trying to scam him. I recorded myself opening the package on camera and showing that I received the wrong item. Additionally, I went back and looked at the pictures on the listing, and after zooming in I noticed that it was indeed a cheaper/older version that he was trying to pass as more expensive one. (video card differences). Now seller blaming me for swapping the laptops. I initiated a return but wondering what should I do next. I'm afraid that seller will receive the package and will claim that I put rocks or something like that inside. Tnx.

Will the seller prove that you are not returning the laptop that was sent.

I want to send the laptop back today, but I fear that seller will try to pull more scam tactics on me, like saying that I shipped the wrong item back or something like that.

Send it back, eBay will side with you without you having to prove anything

I decided to record myself packaging laptop inside of the USPS and giving it to the worker there.

It makes no difference, if the seller will not issue a refund then you simply wait until the time comes when you can ask ebay to step in, and Ebay will issue the refund as per the MBG.

Judging by the present state of affairs I may advise not communicating further with the seller.

You will have your refund one way or the other.

I know that I can leave negative feedback for him, but I wonder if I can report him to eBay for trying to pull the scam, so people are aware of his "business" practices?

There is nothing really to report him for. you can ask ebay to step in if he does not issue your refund by the 2nd business day after he gets the laptop back.

Did you start an item not as described case with eBay and alert them of the problem? They would have made the seller pay return shipping.

You aren't required to send photos as evidence on eBay, and it would not prove that you did not pull a switch anyway.

This may be a silly questions, but why did you record yourself opening the package?

I always record opening packages just in case something like this happens. Especially since he wants to file a police report, I have proof that I'm not the one scamming people.

Why would you record yourself opening the wrong item when you didn't know it was the wrong item yet?

Zooming in on the pictures should have been done by you before you bought, not after.

Caveat Emptor.  Had you done your buyer's due diligence properly before purchase, you would not be in this situation.  Sorry, just take a few seconds more before you buy so you are sure you know just what you are buying, for your own protection.  It makes sense.

I am not saying the seller is right here, but two wrongs don't make a right.
