Just paid for an item last night. Seller asked me to email them at personal email address. Also asked if I'm on Instagram or Facebook. They said they were going to have to relist item because of the excessive ad fees they didn't realize they had to pay. Any thoughts?

@trenzi1 Do not have contact outside of eBay with this seller.
Message them via eBay and advise they need to cancel the sale, citing Out of Stock or Damaged and refund your money.
If they do not comply, wait until the EDD on the order has passed by 24 hours and file an Item not Received case using the MBG - https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/returns-items-not-received-refunds-buyers/returns-items-not-receive...

Yes, don't even reply to that. Either a scam in the making or a very clueless seller. Sort of a toss up but, anyway they are already breaking eBay rules.

Do not respond except to say Please pack my item well and ship it promptly. I bet that the seller is new and ebay has frozen their funds for up to 30 days. Or they did not set up Managed Payments and there is no way that they will get their money. But that is not your problem. Right now, you really can't do anything except wait. If the latest estimated arrival date has passed by 24 hours, open an item NOT received case. Follow the prompts.
Do not give them any personal information. You will have NO buyer protection if you go outside of the Ebay system. Do NOT even acknowledge if you have accounts in those sites.

I think it would be a good idea to check the seller's feedback profile to find out if they are a new seller or not. Check their feedback profile page and click on the as a seller tab, to see if they have sold anything yet or in the last year. They may have some feedback and a 100% rating, but it could all be for buying so far. Letting us know what you find might be helpful.
If you find that they haven't sold before or in over a year, reply to their ebay message and suggest that they do a Google search for "Payments on hold - ebay". They may not know that ebay places a 21-30 hold on new or returning sellers first few payments. Definite do not communicate with them outside of ebay.

I'd report the seller for attempting to take the sale off the platform.

Told the seller I couldn't communicate outside of Ebay. They said fine, they would relist and asked me to cancel order. I then informed them that they were the one who had to initiate the cancelation since I had already paid for the item. They listed it as buyer asked to cancel when I really didn't but ultimately guess it doesn't matter as long as I get my money back. I just don't understand why a seller would make a deal, then want to cancel it the next day because of some ad fee of $290 they said they didn't realize they had to pay. The item was a bit under $2000. Just didn't know if this person was a scammer or oblivious.

He is using PL to get attention, but doesn't want to pay the Ad fee so is trying to move you to another platform.
You should report this behavior, it's bad for the community and he manipulated you to allow him to get out of it by using 'Buyer asked to cancel.'
Probably best for you since you got out of the sale, but maybe not for his next susceptible buyer.

I don't want anyone else to have to deal with this also. How would this best be reported?

Agreed, report the seller here: https://www.ebay.com/help/action?topicid=4022
Two reasons - 1. attempted to take sale off eBay and 2. lied about reason for cancellation, it is sellers like this that give us all a bad rep.

10-4 on that. Thanks

Sellers who message, 'hey we realized the item we listed is defective. Do you want this defective item still or would you like me to cancel it and issue you back a full refund'
Because if the customer replies 'please cancel' Seller can get out of a defect, from OOS/Damaged cancellation.
It always annoys me when sellers do that because what is the buyer going to say? Oh yeah just send that defective item. 🙄

"Just didn't know if this person was a scammer or oblivious."
Between only those two options -- (1) scammer or (2) oblivious -- I would choose oblivious. There are one or two other adjectives that might apply to that seller but, valuing my standing here in the community, I won't say them.
I mean -- that seller was able to choose the percentage he wanted to promote his listing at (aka the "ad fee")
and then tells you he doesn't want to pay it ?? Sounds kinda like an old ID-10-T error.
Was this a new seller, by any chance? If so, he won't last long on eBay.
