Seller Appears to have sent Item to wrong Address

Hi,

I bought a car part from a large German seller on eBay. I received a dispatch email from eBay showing my correct  delivery address(as per my ebay account), but then got an UPS email (presumably the seller's chosen courier) listing a completely incorrect address about 40km away. It seems the seller might have selected a random address because one word of my actual address was in it when printing out the the UPD delivery label.

I've messaged the seller four times to correct this, but no response, and the package is now moving through UPS. Based on past experience, I know UPS won’t adjust the address without the sender’s request.  Anyway, I've always been told It is the senders responsibility to resolve such issues.

If the item gets delivered to the wrong address(which appears likely to happen) and I open a support case with eBay, will they close it simply because it’s marked as delivered with proof from UPS? (seen other ebay users report this) If so, what else can I do on the ebay side?

Thanks,

Darren

Seller Appears to have sent Item to wrong Address

Just to add, the seller did finally get back just a couple of mins ago, But rather that accept the issue as a mistake they made, they have outlined the delivery address they are using was supplied to them, even though that address is nowhere on my ebay account.

I've responded with the email I got from them via ebay from last Monday(14th) when I purchased the item, this clearly outlines the correct delivery and billing addresses (which are the same)

Also I did not use paypal to purchase this, so no chance it's a mix up there either.

It doesn't even appear they bothered to recheck my address details in ebay before they answered me, if they did they would see their mistake very clearly.

@daz_1971,

You may have been the victim of the fake tracking scam. A seller ships something like an envelope or small empty box to an address in your postal zone, thus getting a delivered scan to an address, that ebay has no way of verifying because of shipper's privacy policies.

You are registered as being in Ireland which means you signed up to use ebay either on the U.K. site (ebay.co.uk) or the Irish site (ebay.com/ie/) There are ways to deal with that, but what they are in Ireland may differ from what we have to do in the U.S. due to postal regulations.   Your best bet would be to login to your home site and post your issue on its community boards.

@mudshark61369 Thanks for the response. I'd be very surprised if it was this as it's a huge seller on ebay with good positive feedback rating.

I feel it's more a stupid mistake made by an shipping employee of the company(seller) and then a touch of intransigent by another employee looking after customer requests to admit to this.

I just really wanted to know what my options were, when there is a delivered scan (to wrong address) by UPS. I've never had to contact Ebay in relation to this type issue before.

I've just checked Chatgpt and it seems to suggest that, since the seller shipped to an incorrect address, they are technically at fault and that if I clearly outline this along with all correspondences I've had with the seller up to this point and other relevant details, Ebay should side with me.

Of course, difficult to tell if this will be the case. But looks like a might just have to wait and see how it goes as it doesn't look like the sellers customer services person is going to be of any actual help to me.

@daz_1971,

"Thanks for the response. I'd be very surprised if it was this as it's a huge seller on ebay with good positive feedback rating".

One of the issues you find on listings from across the Pond is, many high volume sellers listings show "Registered as a business seller" and even opening their feedback profile page does not show if they are actually based somewhere else.  The listings do show a city in a country the listing is from. but many of those high volume sellers are actually based in China but have warehouses in the city and country posted.

  Because of that you cannot go by a seller's feedback percentage alone. Some very high volume sellers have an over 99% rating, but have hundreds or even thousands of non positive feedback. Because of that you have to check their feedback profile page and click on the numbers of neutral and negative feedback to read only those comments. If you see many stating, took a long time to be delivered, or was sent to wrong address, came from China, along with lots of fitment or quality issues, chances are good China is the seller's home base, and that is where most of the fake tracking scams originate.

"Of course, difficult to tell if this will be the case. But looks like a might just have to wait and see how it goes as it doesn't look like the sellers customer services person is going to be of any actual help to me".

If you file an item not received dispute, it will be looked at by a computer that can only search for a Delivered scan. If it sees one the dispute will be closed in the seller's favor. When you file the dispute it appears just above your purchase history. When the dispute is closed a message will appear there telling you that. However, there is an Appeal button in the message.

 If you click on it not only can you write out what happened, but you can add screen shots (saved as a document) or photos to the appeal. If your item was not delivered to your postal zone, the tracking information should show that, and you can ask the rep to check that out, and post a saved as a document screen shot of the tracking info. Which should be enough to overturn the original decision and cause a refund to be issued.

If the package was delivered within your postal zone, that is where it gets much harder to obtain the information you need to win an appeal. How much and what information you can get from a shipper, may differ from the steps we have to take, and that is the info you need to try and find on your site's boards.

  I would search its topics for Fake Tracking, Fake tracking scam, Delivered to wrong address... etc. and look for posts that have the green check mark on them. If you open one of those there should be a Go to Best Answer or similarly worded button at the top of the 1st page. Click on it to see what information was given.

@mudshark61369 Thanks again coming back. Understand what you are saying about about the positive feedback rating and it's duly noted. I did and always do my homework before purchasing, this company is solely based in Germany and have their own website, but also do a shop store on Ebay.. They are also on Trustpilot etc and again in this particular case I'm sure this issue comes down to an shipping employee of the company selecting a wrong address from an UPS shipping label creator and then the the customer service person not even bothering to check what I outlined when I contacted them. It's not a scam or a fraud in any manner.

Appreciate your answer on the appeals piece. I wasn't aware of the process. It's looking likely that It will come down to this unless the customer service person for the seller has a change of heart and actually sees the mistake they have made. I have all the emails and message history to backup my case. I'd be surprised if Ebay wasn't supportive of my case. Also to confirm the wrong address where the item is going to get delivered is in a different postal zone, roughly 40kms from where I live. it's even handled by a different UPS depot.  The Customer service person for the seller has already confirmed in an Ebay message the wrong address they sent the item to, but of course they don't see it as been wrong.  So it's clear that when Ebay look at it, that they sent to an address that's not even listed on my Ebay account.

If, on the off chance Ebay don't see it my way. I will raise a chargeback on my card or even look to the small claims court here in Ireland. It's especially setup to deal with such cases and only cost €25 euros to lodge a case.  But hopefully neither will be required and a little common sense from Ebay will prevail if/when they have to look at the  information that I will supply them.

Do a search of this board for fake tracking number scam.  See if that fits.   It's become one of the fastest growing scams.   Get a letter from UPS saying that tracking number is not to your address. An email from them will do.

I hope you paid by credit card.
