So, let me preface this by taking responsibility for being an idiot. I was bidding on an item, and meant to bid 7. Somehow I double-thumbed it and bid $78. My finger hit confirm before my brain screamed nooooo. So, I am an idiot. Achievement unlocked.
I looked up the retract bid process, and it said if you accidentally put in the wrong amount, you can retract. It has a blue "retract a bid" button to press that supposedly would start the process. I did this within minutes of the incorrect bid. However, when I clicked on the button it took me to a screen that said "Sorry, we couldn't find any items from your recent eBay activity." Not only did it not show the erroneous bid, it didn't seem to see any of the other several bids I'd made on items that day. I tried searching by keyword on that page, but it didn't work either.
I tried again today (I also messaged the seller immediately), and got the same result. Am I doing something wrong? The auction is several days away, not in the 12 hour window...

Are you still showing that you bid on that item? I'd contact eBay under their post here right now and ask for help if the bid is still wrong and will not allow you to fix it. But hurry, the board closes in five minutes.

You could have rebid the correct amount immediately after placing the incorrect one, and it would have self corrected. When you contacted the seller did you tell them what happened and request a bid cancellation, so you could rebid with the correct amount? Many if not most sellers are not at their computers 24/7 so there is a chance they haven't seen your message yet. The other possibility is they could cancel your bid an block you from bidding.

You could have rebid the correct [lower $7] amount immediately after placing the incorrect [higher $78] one, and it would have self corrected.

Are you saying that bidding $7 on an auction after successfully bidding $78 removes the earlier, higher $78 bid?

My understanding of the bid process is that if you attempt to bid a lower amount than your high proxy bid without first retracting that high bid, the lower bid will simply be rejected. So I'm not understanding how you think that self correcting would work.

It may be too late to do this now, but if you accidentally bid $100 instead of $10 you can immediately rebid the correct amount, and the previous bid goes away.

@mudshark61369, is that documented anywhere? or something you figured out by experience?
The eBay policy page says that you have to retract the incorrect bid first, before you rebid the correct amount.
