Repairs needed for my reel to reel recorder

I live in West OC 218442. I have a Sony tape recorder I bought used from EBay. Needs belts 

and currently has stoped playing.

When was the purchase made? Did it arrive not working? If so, if the item arrived less than 30 days ago you can open a not as described return. If the player worked when received then what you describe is a risk of buying a used item.

If you are past the 30 days from delivery of your purchase, you can't do a return.

Try googling "Sony tape recorder repair" and also put the model number of the unit you have in the search criteria.

You stand a chance of finding a drive belt to fit.   If it's not  a three motor design, it will also have rubber drive wheels and take up reel slip clutch.  Not much hope finding those parts.  A three motor will have a motor for each spindle in a direct drive.   An internet search can turn up drive belts.

Considering that Sony hasn't made a reel to reel tape recorder since 1982 having belts dry out and break is a common problem for 40+ year old machines.  Fortunately, Sony used the same drive belts for several models of their reel to reels, but having the model number and measuring the belts to ensure a proper fit would help in your search.

Do an ebay search for Replacement drive belts for Sony reel to reel tape recorder, select Consumer electronics as the Category.  On the first results page from the left hand column choose Vintage electronics as the filter.  There are at least 8 results for Sony belts on that page along with players and belts for other Mfr.'s machines. 

If you cannot find a set for your machine listed, there is a site called turntableneedles.co m that has drive belts for all kind of tape players.

Most of these devices have more than one belt. While you are replacing one, be sure to replace the others. They are likely to be super brittle and if not broken now, soon will be, but they are cheap to replace. It's the shipping that gets you. 

Many sellers sell them in kits and they are not expensive at all. I can recommend a seller that I used on eBay for a set of belts for an old 8mm projector, but do not want to break any forum rules.
