Item was a "Buy It Now" or "Best Offer". Seller accepted my offer then informs me the next day that someone hit the "Buy It Now" afterwards and he sold it to them. Suspicious that would occur immediately afterwards as item was listed for days, but whatever. Anyway, can seller ignore my accepted offer and sell afterwards to someone else? Obviously he can-he did-but do I have any recourse except complaining to ebay that probably will do nothing?

Until the item is paid for, it's up for grabs anyone can buy it.

Your Best Offer was a lower price than the Buy It Now?
He sold to the higher bidder.
With two bids on the table , the one that pays first gets the item.

This would be one good reason for somebody to PAY when they accept an offer instead of dinking around. It isn't gone until it is paid for. And it can certainly get purchased at the buy it now price meanwhile.
Wait, if the buyer made an offer and the seller accepted it it is sold...I think. The scenario in the OP is suspect I guess. Unless .
Confused

That scenario seems impossible. When I accept an offer on a listing, the listing ENDS and there is no way someone else could still buy it even if it hasn't been paid for yet. Sounds very fishy to me!

I'm not the OP, but it sounds like the OP was making an offer via messages to the seller, not an actual offer which would end the listing. OP isn't even certain whether it was a BIN/OBO as they didn't actually complete the transaction. This would be why someone else could come along and actually hit the button to end the listing....

"Seller accepted my offer then informs me the next day that someone hit the "Buy It Now" afterwards and he sold it to them".
If you did not receive the offer accepted message for a day or so, after the acceptance message was posted (time stamp in your messages) and you had not paid for the item, the seller may have cancelled your offer, which would allow another person to use buy it now.
If the listing is still in your watch list, cart, or offers list, try clicking on it to see if it ended and when. If it says Out of stock, it had to have been paid for. If there is a "seller ended the listing" note, they may have accepted a higher best offer or BIN price illegally. There should be an ended date and time stamp on the listing page for example. Ended: Nov 1, 2022 3:15pm.
While it is unusual that two members vie for the same buy it now listing at nearly the same time, it is not unheard of. Maybe the other person saw that the item was being watched, and decided to used buy it now.
