When I first signed up on ebay, there weren't any "multiple options" auctions out there, and it was usually very trivial to find the right thing at the right price point. Buying something took 2-3 minutes at most. But ever since they added this "feature", it has really become a pain in the *ss to find the right thing.
For example I have been trying to find some solar panels of a certain wattage and with an aluminium frame (not flexiable type). But most of the auctions are multiple options ones listing various wattages like "5/10/30/50/100W" in the same auction, and they may not even be the same kind of panel. The 10W one may be an aluminium one, while the 30W is a flexible one. The option you are looking for may be sold out when you try to select it from the dropdown list, and it is impossible to find the right thing just from the search alone without clicking into every auction. Sellers may also include dummy options like "cable only" or "empty box" at $1 to make the auction seem cheaper than it really is.
Am I the only one thinking that this is a step in the wrong direction? Did they perhaps add this on purpose to make it harder to sort by "cheapest first" to give the more expensive sellers a chance? Ebay should really change it so that each option also shows as a separate result in the search list. Or only allow non-price related multi options, such as selecting the colour of a product. Shopping on e bay isn't as quick and simple as it used to be. Now it always involves spending a lot of time browsing through auctions before making a decision.

Whatever eBay's intentions were regarding variation listings with price ranges, some unscrupulous sellers have found a way to game the system and push their listings to the top of the lowest price sort order. Trying to find an actual product using such a search becomes an exercise in frustration. Although there is often discussion about reining in the most egregious examples by limiting the range of price variation, eBay does not seem inclined to actually do anything about this form of search manipulation.
Some ways to avoid price variation listings can be found in the following thread, which includes berserkerplanet's "no variations" bookmarklet that can hide price variation listings from an individual search result page:

Any thoughts on what "conprices" might represent?
Nothing beyond the obvious joke.
It would be nice if eBay had a list of variables somewhere, but googling only finds snippets of code from listings. This one turns up a bit:
ul class="lvprices left space-zero conprices"
Unfortunately my knowledge of programming is limited to a few card tricks.
Thanks for looking in to this issue, berserkerplanet. It seems like a nasty exploit. If even a tiny fraction of sellers start using this tactic, sorting by price will be effectively useless throughout eBay.

I wasn't aware that eBay has gone to buyer's choice type auctions. Are you referring to multiple item listings?
