Make offer functionality

It is stupid to be “hostage “ to the eBay imposed 24 hrs. I am the buyer. So let me decide how long I’m willing to wait for the seller not the other way around. Especially when sellers invariably ignore the offer and it expires. It makes more sense to have a configurable set of time choices from few hrs to whole day.

Re: Make offer functionality

They tried that for a while. There were 6 hour increments. eBay abandoned it.

I might not even see your "offer" at 6 hr, or 12 hr.

Just make your offer. If another purchase option comes along, retract. Unless things have changed there is no real penalty for doing so other than if you had to preauthorize a payment that would remain pending for a while and could tie up some "pending" funds.

What 24 hours are you referring to?

Re: Make offer functionality

With Offers sent by buyers, a seller can accept the offer, decline the offer or ignore the offer. Buyers make the offer, sellers have the final decision.
If you send an offer that the seller doesn't like they will either decline or ignore it.
So what is the difference between a "eBay imposed 24 hours" and "waiting a whole day"? Since there are 24 hours in a day then a whole day would equal 24 hours.
If you are that impatient and want the widget without all the waiting just click Buy It Now.

Re: Make offer functionality

When one makes a best offer on an item, that offer time defaults to 24 hrs from the time the offer was submitted. The seller has all that time to decide on a counter offer or reject/accept. They also have the option to ignore it. In the meantime the buyer is stuck waiting for that seller while other opportunities may come and go.
i want to be able to make an offer on an item and select the time I’m willing to wait.
ok one may be able to “retract” said offer but only under strict conditions. This favors the seller imo. Why?

No you obviously don’t understand my complaint and judging me as impatient.

Re: Make offer functionality

I do understand, you want to control how long you wait for acceptance or decline of your offer.

That's not going to happen.
eBay decides the length of time an offer is live, the seller decides if they want to sell to you for your offer price during that time.

Re: Make offer functionality

yes - It IS my feedback. I still think the sellers get all the benefits and the buyers not so much.
thx for your feedback. Telling me that it's not going to happen is not helpful.

Re: Make offer functionality

@vicnas17,

eBay allows sellers up to 48 hours to accept/decline offers because many of them sell part time on the site, and may not be able to access their account because of their full time jobs or families, not to mention time zone differences.

eBay has allowed best offers to be sent for about 12 years now.  They used allow sellers 48 hours to decide what they were going to do, but now that is down to 24 hours.  So they have tried to accommodate both buyers and sellers by lowering the time allowed for sellers to accept offers.

 Some sellers may ignore offers they receive that are too low, thinking there's no way there will be an agreement on a price.

Do keep in mind when you make an offer on an item, the seller will not receive the full price you offer, after paying ebay's fees which on some items can be up to 20% of the selling price with an average of around 14%.

FYI, Many sellers use ebay's quick listing tool, which automatically adds Best Offer to the listings, whether or not the seller wants to accept them.  They can upgrade to a different tool, but ebay tries to discourage them by saying the tool is only for high volume or business sellers.

Maybe if you ever start to sell on this site, you will find out just how buyer oriented the site is.

@vicnas17

It might 'make sense' to someone who joined eBay only 3 weeks ago ... but it doesn't make sense to more experienced buyers and sellers to have offers expire after a 'few hours' ... for several reasons.

Sellers who have thousands of items listed need time to see and evaluate offers.  I doubt that eBay would ever lower the expiration time below 24 hours.

Re: Make offer functionality

actually you are too judging me. I was on ebay for a long time but lost/forgot my access to the old account and could not recover it.
I am not asking ebay to lower it. I am asking for it to be configurable. Buyers have lives too and want to move on to other items if the offer does not work out. It should not be a problem only for buyers.

@vicnas17
Just a tip for the future:  if you don’t want to be judged … try avoiding highly judgmental words (like ‘stupid’) in your OP.

The replies we receive to our posts most often reflect the tone of our own post.  Yours (on this thread) was highly  judgmental.   Just sayin’.  🙂
