Many buyers are getting this, estimated number is 100,000
"The item cannot be purchased since you have received 2 Unpaid item strike(s) in the last 12 months(s)"
Just got off the phone with ebay and this is a huge ebay bug! My account doesn't have any unpaid item strikes and this was verified over the phone by a ebay customer service representative but can't bid on certain sellers. Are there any workarounds with this? Someone buyers have said by removing a seller from your saved sellers it worked for them. This didn't work for me since the sellers i was bidding from were not on my saved sellers.
Any ideas?

Ask the seller to remove his restrictions.

That would most likely get the OP blocked.

What is your source for that number?

Why did you set your feedback to private? Maybe that is what the problem is. You could also ask the seller to put you on their Buyer requirements exemption list although they do not have to agree to that.

"The item cannot be purchased since you have received 2 Unpaid item strike(s) in the last 12 months(s)".
Usually when a bidder is blocked by a seller's buyer requirement the ebay message only says something like "You are not allowed to bid or buy on this sellers items". That message pops up immediately and no further information is given. If the message was sent through ebay messages, then it came from the seller, not ebay.
If ebay were now sending the quoted message, I doubt it would say "months(s)" It would just say "months". If you had a seller cancel your bid, they may have sent you the quoted message if they saw that you have left many non-positive feedback, have your feedback set to private, or have too many bid retractions. Private feedback scares many sellers, we feel the bidder/buyer is hiding something.
"Are there any workarounds with this? Someone buyers have said by removing a seller from your saved sellers it worked for them. This didn't work for me since the sellers i was bidding from were not on my saved sellers".
Your guestimation of how many buyers have been affected and what "some buyers have said" statement, seem to have come from an off ebay source, likely a social media site or anti ebay blog. If this were a common occurrence we would have heard about it on these boards. Others who have been blocked and come here to ask why, do that because they were not told why.
If you have been blocked because of a Buyer Requirement or because the seller added you to their blocked Buyer List (BBL) most likely they have also blocked communication from you as well, so you cannot contact them. If it is a glitch, try contacting the seller, if you get a "the seller is not accepting messages from you" type message you have been blocked for some reason.

As your feedback is set to private I could not check for bid retractions, but enough of those along with strikes can also cause difficulties/blocks. The customer service rep was wrong, actually it was unusual for you to be able to contact them on a weekend.

Source is ebay customer respresentative as simple as that.
I am not a seller so no need to show my feedback. I have toggled to public and tried to bid and same issue. The Buyer exemption is only possible if the seller is willing to, some sellers don't even do it. But this is a good idea to try. Let me message some that i have the problem with.

If you have no unpaid item strikes and no retracted bids, try buying from another device.
Try signing out of eBay, clearing cache', signing in again and see if that works.

As a seller, I had a bidder that couldn't get past my Bidder Block of 2(+) Unpaid Items, and asked that I exclude him/her from the block... so I did.
The bidder bought and never paid, so I'll not entertain that request again. But the workaround does exist. Good luck.

The same exact thing is happening to me. Totally random when I can't bid and the message "two strikes' comes up. I have bought 1000's of items on E Bay , only started recently and I have no unpaid items ever. 100% feedback. Totally frustrated today when bid at last minute for an item in UK very keen to acquire , never bid to this seller before , who sells overseas but was blocked due to two strikes. I have already bid and bought four items this week including one from UK. of course no recourse or anyone to speak to at E Bay

I don't have any unpaid items either and get the same erroneous message when I place bids with certain sellers. Ebay only will file an issue notice and has no resolution in 3 weeks. (I've called 3 times). They told me many buyers are experiencing this issue. This is a huge issue because sellers are no longer receiving the highest bid and they don't have any clue. I've told a few sellers to remove their restrictions so they can get more bids, but they did not care to. Just another ebay glitch ...seemed to start when ebay gave sellers the ability to just cancel orders after 4 days without notifying the buyer.

On my account there are no restrictions for buyers, but buyers are complaining about the same problem!

And this would be what is causing the strikes - eBay cancels unpaid items now and automatically issues strikes for NON payment

I think you might be on to something downunder-61. I was bidding on a seller's items over a period of 7 days and I informed him that I would pay for everything at the end. But then his unpaid item assistant (not ebay) cancelled my order without any notice. He did send me another invoice for everything and I paid for it all. No unpaid item strikes appear on my account. Maybe ebay has a glitch with this new software that stores hidden erroneous unpaid items that don't show up.....

What was the phone number you called to reach ebay.
