Fakes Being Sold

I have noticed in the fashion/costume jewelry sections, there are a lot of fakes which are being touted as 'vintage'.  They appear to have been made from molds of original pieces, but the ultra shiny finish and poor workmanship gives them away.  I got skunked once; but upon re-reading the description,  the seller did state it was a ''new piece'.   Anyone else run into this?

There are a lot of items in many categories which have been produced over long periods of time, with a continuous decrease in quality.

Selling low quality items is not a violation of Ebay rules, so many Ebay sellers sell low quality items.

Selling these branded low quality items may or may not be a problem if they are not represented as antique, old, or the mostly meaningless term vintage.

Often these products are priced in line with the quality.

Yes we know. This topic keeps being brought up a lot. All you can do is report the ad to Ebay. They will most likely do nothing. You need to keep in mind which also keeps getting brought up Ebay agents are not experts. They will not be able to judge what is fake or not however only by content. So recommendations are know what you are buying and beware of fakes coming from overseas.

@adagiogirl

This isn't a new problem and isn't just limited to overseas sellers. It also isn't just limited to eBay. I can remember going to antique jewelry shows back in the 1980s (yes, those used to be a regular thing) and seeing dealers selling reproductions as new. The difference back then was that they weren't so glaringly fake.

EBay has no way to determine that an item is fake, so reporting listings is an exercise in futility. As with everything else on the site you have to be an informed consumer when buying here.

Sellers using the words 'vintage' and 'antique'...buyer beware.

There is no need to use these words for buyers are rather smart to know what might be old or new.

It's the same in the stamp category...

However, costume jewelry does sell and there is a big market for these items.

Words like vintage and antique mean nothing. However they do sound better than old and musty.

Got to read the listings with great care. Avoiding sellers that seem to be " weasel " wording.
