Default Payment Method.. "can" or "must" set? Why can't ebay just be honest?

So you try to put an offer on an item, and you get a pop-up that says "Here's what's new! Now you CAN set a default payment option, and we'll automatically process your order if it gets accepted" How exciting! lol

Then you try to put an offer in and it won't let you UNLESS you select a default payment method!  Now I also sell, so I know it would be a good thing if I automatically get paid when someone wins an item of mine. But why can't the ebay Gods just be honest and say "Now you MUST select a default payment method, or you can't put an offer in"?

I know it sounds petty on my end, but how many others walked away from buying on ebay because of the games they play? I went from selling 30 items a month to around 5, and I know the economy is bad, but maybe changes like this aren't helping either.

Default Payment Method.. "can" or "must" set? Why can't ebay just be honest?

It's December 19, 2023 and I'm commenting on this thread that was started in June because this new system was just applied me. Just days ago I placed a bid as I have for the last 20 years. My first thought is this might be the stupidest thing ebay has done since they removed the "view all lists" option.

I didn't get a message/notice from ebay that this would be happening, the message pop's up when I click place bid. Not notifying a customer of an impending change is a poor choice of a business practice.

My second thought is why it was applied to some people 6 months ago and others like myself just now.  Why the disparate treatment?

But in any event I chose not to bid.  Unfortunate for seller's if it drives away bidders (which it seems most likely to do).  I will have to check into how it affects buy it now items.

I can understand it for new bidders, but for people who have a good track record it is just plain stupid. As for The claim "To protect our marketplace, we're making sure no item gets left unpaid. Here's how:"

I call bull. Deleting accounts of habitual nonpaying bidders is how you protect the market place. Sellers have the ability to block bidders, so bidders can protect themselves.

There is something more going on with this move but the reasoning escapes me. If anyone figures it out please let me know and if I figure it I will post back here.

I just lost an auction  because when I made my bid an ebay window opens up and demands I first make a default payment.  Whose idea was this? I can't use a default payment because I make both personal and business purchases. So, two different credit cards. Why? Why? Why?

I'm sure others were bidding as well as Sunday is ebay's biggest night. End result for the seller on this auction... $7.99 for a $35 item.

Everyone loses.

@jon_e_quest

Take note of the date of this thread.  It's from a year ago, any information in it is more than likely out dated.
Instead of dragging up and piggybacking on old threads start a new one.
Thanks.

Trying to make the point that after a year, and lots of negative comments, ebay still doesn't care...

Correct, ebay seems to be very stubborn even after lots of negative comments from both buyers and sellers regarding auto-pay. They treat the actual customers like sheep, and the shareholders is all they seem to care about in the short term. But my feeling is this will accelerate the amount of sales and buyers they have been losing. I guess time will tell, their quarterly reports will certainly be interesting to watch as this unfolds.
