Bought an electric fuel pump for an injected VW. Searched "USA only". Item location of the one I bought: Milipitas, California. Tracking shows it shipped from Mississippi, which is annoying enough because I'm in Oregon and needed it sort of fast, but what's REALLY annoying is that I was checking my account statement for something else earlier today and noticed a "PayPal Currency Conversion Fee" from USD to HKD tied to this transaction.
What NOW? How is this allowed? Is it any wonder buyers are fed up?

Although I know you buy in 5 languages, so you probably checked this, but it seems the seller may be registered in Hong Kong on their seller profile page.

Ran out of edit time.
And that is why it is allowed.

So in other words you're telling me this money grab con job is perfectly OK with eBay? I search USA only, buy on eBay.com, merchandise is located in USA, ships from USA, paid for in USD, and the buyer gets ganked with a conversion fee anyways?
ONLY on eBay! No wonder buyers are deserting this place in droves. there's always some "GOTCHA!" that costs money, time, or both.

They're not. They're registerd in China.
In all 5 languages, this says ripoff.
And kindly keep your sarcasm to yourself, thanks, I've enough of my own.

UNANNOUNCED conversion fee, I might add.

georg- yes, I'm aware of that, but no sarcasm there. I don't know why you bought and now complain when you were aware that they were registered in China. You are an experienced buyer in five languages, so you have said, so I was gently pointing out that you would know that the item location is not necessarily where the seller is located, and that can drive currency conversion, which you would also know through experience.
Of course if you prefer to be indignant, be my guest. That is your right. I'm sorry for intruding on your rant.
Here, I will even help~Get out the pitchforks, it's all ebay's fault! Just kidding here.

I don't think "buyers are leaving in droves" over this, as I rarely see a post on it.
Now there are other reasons that figure into why a buyer leaves, as you know, that have had many more posts by many different people...
I was just surprised to see this from you, knowing you are such an experience buyer~but I guess I shouldn't be. No sarcasm there at all.

Yes, they would be as Hong Kong is in China. I should have said they may be located in China.

PayPal doesn't charge the buyer a "currecy conversion fee" or anything like that (only sells you foreign currency at a markup above the "mid-market rate" that is quoted by eBay and other financial media that quote a single rate for a currency pair).
That is YOUR bank/credit card issuer that imposed that fee, because that is a fee they charge when they determine that the money is going "cross-border" to another country, supposedly to cover extra reporting requirements.

You're right~ Bank fee, not Paypal fee, inevitable when buying internationally.

My apologies in that you thought this was sarcasm when it was not. You had hit another poster with that when they offered a comment, so I feltI should bring it up first, to acknowledge how highly experienced you are. Didn't want to take that away from you. Bub and Erz should be along for you soon.

Interesting. The charge says PayPal and I've never been charged this on Amazon for similar transactions.

Yes, they would be as Hong Kong is in China. I should have said they may be located in China.

Hong Kong and China have two different currencies. I was charged for conversion from HKD to USD for an item located in USA sold by a seller in China.

I'm not saying buyers are leaving over this specifically- it's this PLUS everything else that changes almost on a daily basis around here that cost time and money.
Any chance you could point me to the policy that says this is allowed? Thanks.
