Core Charge

I bought motor parts on ebay and there was no core charge up front, but they do claim I need to send the cores back or there will be a charge plus fees after 21 days. Here is their words:

“We do require the core to be returned within 21 DAYS, starting from the date of delivery, and provide you with a prepaid return label at NO ADDITIONAL COST. Please ensure to drop the package off at FedEx and request a receipt for your records. Should the core not be returned, a $250 core fee would apply (per cylinder head), along with the Prepaid Label cost, plus a 35% COLLECTION FEE. We accept the cores in any condition, so long as all the parts are included. If you do not have a core, please let us know as soon as possible so that we may work with you.”

Since they aren’t charging me up front for the core, is there any way for them to charge me if I don’t send the core in like they claim I need to? I was told this is just a scare tactic used so they can make money off returned parts.

Re: Core Charge

If you need help later on, you won't have a warranty.  Still don't see why you would want to keep some used heavy parts laying around that will probably end up in a landfill one day.

Warranty:

We offer a 3 year, unlimited mile warranty that covers the entire cylinder head and its parts. WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER ANY LABOR COSTS OR PARTSWarranty is voided if the core is not returned and/ or if the remanufactured cylinder head we send you overheats. We recommend using the proper equipment and parts during installation and advise that you ensure your cooling system components (i.e. hoses, water pump, thermostat, radiator, etc.) are in perfect condition.

Re: Core Charge

I keep old parts around because it allows me to fix things in a pinch without having to wait on parts to ship. And I’m not worried about the warranty; I can almost guarantee they would fight any kind of warranty claim and say it was installer error.

Re: Core Charge

I am unaware of any way to charge a customer a core charge after the fact on eBay.  They do not have your credit card information, and I also believe FedEx labels are not paid for until they are used so I think they are just blowing smoke.  When I have a core charge, I add it to the sales price and if the customer returns the core, I refund that portion.  As far as a warranty, there is no way to enforce that either once the eBay money back guarantee expires.  I honor my warranties, but I can see how easy it is to not do so.

Re: Core Charge

That's a proper core charge. Thank you for being honest.

Re: Core Charge

This was an unspoken scenario but I'm just going to say it just because I feel like it's something good to address.

Is it possible for the seller to take legal action against the buyer off platform? I'm saying that there could be a scenario where the seller decides to do this to enforce what they're saying regarding their core charge

I genuinely have no clue if they can do that or if it can be enforced, but I wanted to address the possible scenario to be out on the open

Re: Core Charge

If a core was not part of the original "deal", then they will not be able to change it now.

If they do try and charge you, dispute it on your credit card.

The price should have included a core if they wanted one.

Not worried about the ethics / morality of doing this?

Re: Core Charge

Not when it was already overpriced to begin with and all they will do is sell off the parts for profit. Makes more sense for me to keep the parts as backup.

Re: Core Charge

This was my only concern, but I feel like if they didn’t even have a core charge up front, it’s obviously not that important to them. They just want the lowest possible price up front and are hoping I send my old parts to them so they can sell them for a buck.

Re: Core Charge

This answers my question. Their only way to charge me after the fact would be legally, but if they didn’t care enough to have the core charge up front in the first place, it must not be that important to them. I think they just want the free spare parts to make a buck on ebay, and all the numbers and fees talk is just to scare you into giving them parts.

Re: Core Charge

It came with a PREPAID RETURN POSTAGE LABLE.

so why wouldn’t you return the core(s) and be done with the business?

Re: Core Charge

There are times you want to upgrade a part so don't have the same core, or the old is too broken to rebuild. I'm looking at an ad with an undisclosed $ after sale core penalty and ebay has no way to report these charges anymore.

Re: Core Charge

That is not allowed on eBay.   You can report that to eBay.
